s/s shopping list

the beginning of february signals the beginning of the spring/summer deliveries. sales all over the world are winding down, and sale signs are being taken down and replaced with ones reading "new collection." so what to buy, what to buy? the "it" girls of manila have already taken stock of what the trends are and are quick to pick up, and we've seen them around town wearing these very things. here's a mini-guide on what to buy when faced with racks and shelves of brand new goodies:
1. leggings: better believe it, these 80s staples are definitely back. young girls in their teens and 20s weren't even born the first time we wore these footless tights, so they'll like them worn under minis, shorts and sheer dresses. (outfit by anna sui)
2. white shirt: this forever classic will be everywhere in all shapes and silhouettes, but the basic button-front is the season's must-have. best worn like a school marm's uniform with a slim, pencil-cut skirt, but funkify the look with platform soles. (outfit by marc jacobs)
3. platform shoes: all those feminine frocks of spring need to be grounded, so pick a substantial shoe with a semi-platform and a high, thick heel. closed-toe, open-toe, sandals or pumps, in leather, patent, croc or fabric, they're all good. (sandal by donna karan)
4. patent bag: if you must get one bag this season, make it a patent leather bag in a bright, look-at-me color. images of fendi's B bags have been dancing in our heads since we first spotted them on the runway (via internet, of course) last september. (bag by fendi)
5. wide belt: and worn around the waist this time, thank you very much, over jackets, coats, blouses, skirts and trousers. (outfit by fendi)
6. drainpipes: we've been so dependent on those boot-cuts to lengthen our legs, but put them on hiatus for now. pants and jeans are long, lean and mean—very rock & roll! (outfit by balenciaga)
7. shorts: the shorts trend continues! pick your length according to the occasion/location, your comfort level, and of course, just how good your legs are. (outfit by chanel)
8. white dress: sure, we love our LBD, but this season is all about the LWD. choose from lace, couture fabrics and sheer chiffon. (outfit by chloé)
9. nude: when versace sent flesh-toned gowns, dresses, trousers and shorts down the catwalk, instead of their usual acid brights, we knew it had to be an important shade for spring/summer. (outfit by versace)
10. lace: go full-on lace with a dress, or keep it to a minimum with touches of crochet or eyelet. and make it white, of course! (outfit by dolce & gabbana)
