new fashion haunt: calliope

tomorrow is the soft opening for the first branch of italian label calliope. have any of you heard of this brand before? of course it's been years since our last trip to italy, but when we went to visit the store a couple of days ago at mall of asia, we didn't even know how to pronounce it. according to google, calliope is a muse, a musical instrument, a band, a character in a neil gaiman novel, even a blog. but nothing about it being an italian fashion brand. all we know is that it's owned by the same company that owns terranova. in the philippines, both brands are owned by the victor siasat's group, which also owns guess, mango, mossimo, lulu castagnette, terranova, gloria jean's coffees, and tower records (or rather, he used to), which will soon close its doors globally forever. (did we miss anything?) the merchandise of calliope is pretty much like zara and mango—sportswear separates that are easy to mix and match, and displayed according to color scheme, style, and story, i.e., victorian, uniform, country, glam rock, romantic, etc. plus the all-important accessories. it also has clothes for your little fashionista and fashionisto. sana may winter tayo dito, 'no? how cute will your baby boy or girl look in these adorable coats, sweaters, mufflers, hats, and boots?? calliope also has a men's line, which, unfortunately, the distributor decided not to bring in. what?! don't they know that zara is making a killing thanks in part to its menswear section?! well, they're making a killing, period, but men in manila are beginning to look just a little better dressed, even just because of zara's basic knits, classic trousers, and trendy shoes. a little peek into calliope's autumn/winter collection...
