esprit envy

remember esprit back in the 80s? it was the zara of its day—the hot brand, the status symbol among teens and young women. we loved those huge catalogs they used to release every season, often using their own employees as models. the company had a real family feel to it and we “met” the couple that started it all, doug and susie tompkins, and the rest of their “family” through those catalogs. and who can forget those trips to san francisco every summer, where a visit to the esprit warehouse was a must! we even got to tour their offices, which was bright, full of plants, and the blonde-wood floors forbade anyone to wear high heels—it was that casual! then the couple divorced, sales dropped, the brand was bought by a chinese company, and esprit lost its direction and luster. we grew up on esprit and we would like nothing more than to see the revival of this much-loved brand of children of the 80s. so we were happy to see the local distributor, cinderella, doing its part to bring back interest in esprit. they renovated first its SM megamall branch, then its glorietta branch, which had a formal opening last thursday. the basement, which was beginning to look a little like a dingy tiangge, has been transformed into the esprit we see in other countries, like hong kong and singapore: bright, arranged systematically and with those distinct blonde-wood floors! maybe now, it can lure customers away from the zaras and the mangos and back into their fold. photos to be posted later! gotta go to bed!

UPDATE: a few looks from the fashion show...

before the show ended, they introduced 10 "real" young women as the EDC (esprit de corp) models... but they walked by so fast that we couldn't catch their names or their pictures, so we don't know who's who. oops, we even cut someone off on the extreme left. but we asked and found who they were. ladies and gentlemen, the EDC models (you'll just have to guess who's who):
• noelle hernandez - 2006 cinderella image model
• kriselle yatco - boxing enthusiast
• kat cruz - fashion associate, just shop
• katrina domingo - psychology major, de la salle university
• michelle robles - integrated marketing ad communications graduate, university of asia and the pacific
• isabelle de venecia - 3rd generation cindrerella marketing corporation
• ciara marasigan - accessories designer
• anne matoto - MTV marketing manager
• jessica keinle - belly dancer/model
• alexi alunan - commercial model/spanish tutor

very vera

today we attended the launch of vera wang's first fragrance called, er, vera wang and vera wang for men. it was held at the glorietta 4 hallway beside bon apetit. that's an actual vera wang gown, left, described as "oyster duchess strapless satin A-line gown with side gather at bust at bodice and back tie train." so we got to try the fragrances, both for men and women, and they both smell good (someone even said she actually uses the men's variant).

and we listened to the requisite speeches of the principals...

and we watched vera on video talk about the fragrances...
and patiently waited as the model in vera wang unveiled the fragrance, walked around and spritzed our wrists (there was a male model too...)...
but the most bizarre thing was this man we met who looked like he didn't belong there. too bad we didn't take a pic of him (and why would we ??) because we would post it and say to all PRs and events people: ban this man! apparently he is a professional gatecrasher. he lurks the different malls and attends launches held at malls and eats and drinks and schmoozes (more like mooches) like he belongs there! this time he was wearing a bright green floral shirt (you would think he would dress more inconspicuously) and mingled with the "lady guests," but as soon as he would turn his back, we would all ask each other, who the hell is he?? well, we forget his name (why would we remember it??), but he's probably in his late 50s/early 60s, with gray hair and a paunch (parang pulis), and he said he works for mettro magazine. no, that's not a typo. before we could ask, oh, so you work with so-and-so, he specified, "it's spelled with a double T." double T?? "it stands for trash and traffic." we swear, he really did say that!! beware!

target targets couture

this past weekend, we didn't leave the house except to go to mass on sunday. we didn't even leave the bedroom. in fact, we never stood up from sitting in front of the computer. we surfed. we lurked. we hopped. we chatted. we e-mailed. we googled. we you tubed. the one thing we didn't do was blog. 'la lang. tamad. but today we're going to share something amusing we found on-line. our favorite american retailer, target, known for its cheap and chic clothing, launched last month a new high-end line called targèt couture (note the accent on the e, so it's really pronounced tar-zhay). sold only at hip LA boutique intuition, targèt couture has pricey skinny jeans, cashmere hoodies, embroidered tees, and lookey! a limited-edition leather-trimmed canvas duffle bag with an all-over bull's-eye logo, pretty steep by target standards at US$115.
but that's cheap compared to this goyard croisière 35 owned by the bag hag, which costs US$1690 at barneys.com (even more when you add the customized crown and monogram!).
(goyard photo credit: the bag hag)
and what about this canvas tote (US$55) with an in-your-face logo:
it looks a lot like chuvaness's red louis vuitton globe cabas shopper:

rustan's vs shopwise

we heard about this secret sale happening in rustan's. secret because it was being held only at the harrison plaza branch, the rustan’s that time (and rustan’s loyalists) forgot. secret because we don’t think they advertised the sale. secret because we were told that the discontinued brands would all be transfered there. so yesterday we braved the swarm of reckless jeepneys circling the place and went. entering harrison plaza is like entering a time warp. we don't think they've ever renovated. you have to understand, harrison plaza was one of the first, if not the first, mall in the philippines. of course this was back in the 70s, when SM was still literally just a shoe mart, and the land glorietta occupies now was wide open space. to this day, though, harrison plaza is the only mall that has a traditional anchor on each end—it’s the only one that has both rustan’s and SM. (glorietta doesn’t count; SM is detached from the mall.) anyway, back to the sale. rustan’s, harrison plaza is so small that you can make one round in two minutes flat. and in those two minutes, we didn’t see anything exciting. there were a lot of things on sale, though, mostly house brands like U, criselda and jill. items that used to cost thousands of pesos, now all less than a thousand. but of course, they’re seasons old. unfortunately, we didn’t feel like digging through piles or rifling through racks just to find that one gem, so we left empty-handed. well, almost. we did buy a set of four white espresso cups, on sale from P645, down to P275. score! frustrated and still itching to shop, we headed to shopwise downstairs (where rustan’s supermarket used to be). we love to shop at shopwise! patterned after american supersupermarkets like target, kmart and wal-mart, we like the soshal way they display their merchandise. parang states…

and if you're not sure about the price of an item, you can use this little machine to scan the bar code, and voila! the price pops up!
and who would’ve thought we would get our fashion fix here. look, rib-knit tank tops! so many colors! so cheap! you can buy one in every color!
and as an elite-card-carrying member of shopwise, we always receive a little gift every time we shop there. sometimes we get packaged cookies, last month it was a mother's day kit of dove soap and bimpo, this time it was a father's day set of deodorant, bath soap and a pricey gillette razor! PS: shopwise closes at 11pm, so you can pop in for a late-night shopping fix for food or fashion.

we love lesley

groan... we long for the days when we didn't have to get up so early in the morning (is 7am early?), prepare our breakfast (coffee and some chicken empanada from starbucks bought the day before and popped into the microwave), and get ready for work (which takes three hours! mainly because we change our outfit five times. we feel fat!)... because last night was one of those nights that just went on and on and on... and unfortunately, we don't have batteries like the energizer bunny that we can just replace when they're all used up... and sleeping in today would have been heaven... but reality bites! so we had to take a cold shower to wake us up and go go go! ugh. this, our friends, is the reason for the clouds in our brain:
the absolut party (oh no, not another one... yes, another one...). last night's party (held at an abandoned house in dasmariñas village, which had to be outfitted with electricity, running water and air-conditioning by the organizers) was to launch the third absolut label fashion collection. the first was all about T-shirts (country collection), the second about bags (famous collection), and this latest one, about underwear (1879—the year absolut was founded—collection). as usual they picked the best up-and-coming young fashion talent from all over the world, and one of them was filipino designer lesley mobo! wow proud! out of the eight picked this year, who all had to design underwear based on the famous vodka bottle, only lesley designed underwear for men. parang YC bikini briefs! let's watch the show, shall we (and sorry you won't get to see much because the models were covered with these sweeping black capes, which practically covered everything, and they were not instructed to stand still long enough for the photographers to take pix. or maybe they didn't follow instructions? to get a better view, log on to this)...
bambi by laura (spain)
anna kuczynska (poland)
neon (brazil)
swash (UK)
apostolos mitropoulos (greece)
jean-pierre braganza (canada)
ashish (india)
and now we introduce you to...
ladies and gentleman, lesley mobo!
that's not him. that's the model wearing his design. here's a close-up, just in case you didn't get a good look at those tighty whities...
this is lesley mobo. isn't he cool? feeling british...
well, he can actually be considered a british designer now because he's been based in the UK for many years, and is a head designer for the jasmine di milo line at harrod's. and he's the only filipino designer we know who has actually shown a collection in paris fashion week! (albeit not under his name.) basta, lesley, pag famous ka na, don't forget us ha...

let the spending begin

wow, talk about getting a headstart. we just got a text from our favorite mango sales associate that their end-of-season sale begins today. but she said mango glorietta, so we're not sure about the other branches. with zara just around the corner, let's see if the mango-sale frenzy of yesteryears will repeat itself—or will it just be a distant memory? will women still skip work just to get frist dibs on the good stuff—or will they decide that they can wait till the weekend? will the queues just to get into the store snake around the mall—or will the staff be begging people to come in? well, we plan to check it out (and to think we were just there yesterday! grrr... sana they started a day early...) and will report back later.

new schus open

remember we reported about a month ago that schu in glorietta 3 was moving next door to the former furla location. the new schu has actually been operational for over a week now but this afternoon was the formal opening of this favorite fashion haunt of shoe junkies who need a foot fix but don’t want to spend a lot (hello, nothing over P2,000!). welcome!
that’s ruby gan, one of the owners, and just seen behind her in white capris is her partner jayjay onrubia. these women have a gem in their hands (feet?) because they do a service to, er, people like us who are obsessed with fashion accessories. so anyone in the market for a wedge (the must-have shoe of the season)? take your pick (remember, nothing over P2,000)…

aside from all the lovely shoes displayed in well-lit shelves that encourage you to pick up, fondle and salivate over the many styles just calling out your name (thefashpack, thefashpack...), we really like the back wall, which you can spot from the outside, and well, you just have to come in and browse, try on, buy...
and here are some of those shoe junkies we were talking about earlier...

and lookey! swell swag! scéntholïc for schu foot scrub, foot lotion, and that curious beauty product, foot blush! (only this one is in a practical liquid spray form—fresh!)
tomorrow, schu at SM mall of asia opens. see you there!

what we did last friday

last friday, we attended an exhibit at store for all seasons. titled “small, medium, large and furry,” it featured crochet characters by sharon see (the furry), mini installations by genie ranada (the small), and paintings by lala gallardo and gel jamlang (the medium and the large). our favorites were the crochet “monsters” by sharon see. we really regret not learning how to crochet from our grandmother, and now that our dear “mama” is gone, we will never learn how, sob, sad :’-( check the artwork out (up till july 7), they're all for sale! (and a lot already sold.)
sharon see's "seemore butts":
and our favorite "otto":

mini installations by genie ranada:
"last pair"
"cubicle"
medium-sized paintings by lala gallardo
large-sized painting by gel jamlang
