where in the world is nicolas?

he came. we saw. but we didn’t quite conquer. because no photos were allowed. corny. one of the most important international fashion designers of his generation right in front of us, and we were not allowed to take his picture. well, at least we got to meet him and shake his hand… we’re talking about none other than nicolas ghesquière, creative director for the past 10 years for the house of balenciaga, which is always one of the most anticipated collections every season. and after the stress of presenting his last collection in paris three weeks ago, nicolas decided to take a much-needed holiday in amanpulo down in palawan, where royalty (real and hollywood) have been known to get some R&R. nicolas came with a “friend,” who happens to be an equally famous guy from his field, football, which we know nothing about. his name is hidetoshi nakata (hide, pronounced hee-deh, for short), and he’s made his millions, so he’s rich and he buys a building in new york, which he wants to turn into a boutique hotel, and that’s where he met nicolas. and all this we get from eavesdropping on other people’s conversations. so are they lovers? maybeeee, we don’t knoooow, but they didn’t want to be photographed togetherrrr… they didn’t even sit next to each other. so friday, nicolas was back in manila, and we were getting a blow-by-blow of his whereabouts. he’s in shangri-la plaza! in homme et femme! with jappy! checking out his collection! he’s having dinner! at people’s palace! in greenbelt! with ben chan! then we get the invitation that ben chan will be hosting a dinner for nicolas ghesquière on saturday at 8:30pm at chef laudico’s bistro filipino, the new chic resto at fort bonifacio. and the fash pack is on the guest list, woo-hoo! half the restaurant was reserved for the dinner. invited guests included top magazine editors, fashion journalists, society columnists, a few bench endorsers, some designers… and madame imelda marcos?? well, she was a big balenciaga fan, and cristóbal himself designed gowns for her when she was first lady. she was telling anyone who would listen, “he loved the filipino dress [meaning the terno] because he loved big sleeves.” and she got to sit next to nicolas too. we got to sit at the table next to his. so we managed to sneak in a couple of shots sans flash of course, till his manager, a woman our table christened toni leviste, spotted us. this is our very dark, very blurry pic of nicolas: this is “toni leviste” waving us off: in the end, it was all very frustrating for all the guests because we all brought cameras, so we just ended up taking pictures of each other. can you imagine having to write about a once-in-a-lifetime event, publishing photos of all the well-dressed guests, except the guest of honor?

special thanks go out to chuvaness, dennis lustico, jojo liamzon, and mr. ben chan.

new fashion haunt: calliope

tomorrow is the soft opening for the first branch of italian label calliope. have any of you heard of this brand before? of course it's been years since our last trip to italy, but when we went to visit the store a couple of days ago at mall of asia, we didn't even know how to pronounce it. according to google, calliope is a muse, a musical instrument, a band, a character in a neil gaiman novel, even a blog. but nothing about it being an italian fashion brand. all we know is that it's owned by the same company that owns terranova. in the philippines, both brands are owned by the victor siasat's group, which also owns guess, mango, mossimo, lulu castagnette, terranova, gloria jean's coffees, and tower records (or rather, he used to), which will soon close its doors globally forever. (did we miss anything?) the merchandise of calliope is pretty much like zara and mango—sportswear separates that are easy to mix and match, and displayed according to color scheme, style, and story, i.e., victorian, uniform, country, glam rock, romantic, etc. plus the all-important accessories. it also has clothes for your little fashionista and fashionisto. sana may winter tayo dito, 'no? how cute will your baby boy or girl look in these adorable coats, sweaters, mufflers, hats, and boots?? calliope also has a men's line, which, unfortunately, the distributor decided not to bring in. what?! don't they know that zara is making a killing thanks in part to its menswear section?! well, they're making a killing, period, but men in manila are beginning to look just a little better dressed, even just because of zara's basic knits, classic trousers, and trendy shoes. a little peek into calliope's autumn/winter collection...

we never win anything—till now

it happened, it finally happened. god loves the fash pack. or at least someone from motorola does. yesterday, even though it was a holiday and we would rather lie in bed all day long, it was a good thing we decided to peel ourselves off the kutson, get dressed in "a reflection of you," and drive to rockwell tent for the "beyond limits, beyond wonder" event of shu uemura, motorola, smart and JAL. as we were signing up at the registration table, we were given a card with a number and told to keep it for the raffle. oooh exciting! but we got even more excited when one of the ladies in charge told us to sign our name not at the regular guest list, but at the VIP guest list. oooh what goodies could be in store for us...? so it was soshalan time as we sipped our wine and hobnobbed with the likes of maurice, pepper, celine, tim, lucy, gretchen, rajo, rhett, daphne, xeng (no last names needed), and the shu evangelist herself, tina.

then the announcement came that motorola was raffling away 100 moto krzr cell phones that night! yes, you read right: ONE HUNDRED. not one, not two, not just three. ONE HUNDRED. winning numbers were announced 10 at a time and flashed on big screens around the tent. then 10 boys would walk out holding up the winning number on one hand and a silver tray with your phone on the other. and if you're one of the lucky ones, you walk up and grab that baby! and we were one of the lucky ones, woo-hoo!!! because of the frenzy over those phones, everybody forgot about shu uemura's rouge unlimited lipstick. well, at least we did. *insert sheepish grin here* but they did have a nice display and a cool video by team manila.
PS: blogger is so fucked up. pictures to follow once they un-fuck up.
UPDATE: pix are up! but it wasn't easy...

the happiest place on earth?

we are now back to our regular programming. the fash pack just spent a few days in hong kong. most of the good hotels in the kowloon side and the hong kong side were fully booked due to the numerous trade fairs and conventions being held at the same time at several different locations. so where did we end up staying? at hong kong disneyland hotel! well, it was either that or panda hotel in some god-forsaken area where the taxis probably don't even go to. well, disneyland isn't close to anything either, and since we landed late at night, we decided to stay in and hang out in our room, instead of taking the MTR to lan kwai fong (which would take an hour, not to mention, changing trains three times). well, at least in this hotel, everything in the mini-bar is free (two bottles of water, a coke, and a diet coke). if you want liquor, though, you have to order it through room service. can't have the kiddies sneaking off with a beer or a 15-ml scotch. and speaking of kiddies, the place was crawling with those shrieking no-neck monsters dressed in their halloween costumes. sometimes we couldn't even tell the kids from the staff. look at this bellhop, doesn't he look like the little man in louis vuitton's new monogram groom series?
<-HK vs LV->
in fairness, the room was huge, clean, and very comfy, in spite of the tacky decor. check out the detail on the bathroom mirror:
this is us in the morning.
this is us after a few drinks.
the next day, we got a glimpse of the view from our balcony. now wouldn't you want to have your morning coffee here? we had breakfast of siopao and siomai here, the grand salon: and this was our view: this is called the sorcerer's lounge. we think it's because you can smoke here: there's something about disneyland that really brings out the kid in you, no matter how gross that sounds. was it our overactive imagination (or our bad eyesight?) that we began to see mickey everywhere?

the fash cam: opaque tights

it's been a while, hasn't it, since we posted the fash cam's pix of manila's stylish gals donning the latest, the hottest, the trendiest, well, trends. but after viewing the spring/summer 2007 collections on style.com, not to mention being inspired by the sartorialist's coverage of what people are wearing OFF the runway (which is infinitely MORE interesting than what’s ON the runway), we decided to go back to photographing real women’s real style. we noticed that a lot of the women in paris and milan were wearing leggings, but ahem, we’ve been there, done that (see the fash cam dated may 29, 2006), so we went with the next best thing: opaque tights. we haven’t worn these since the 80s (just like leggings) (and of course, any time we jet to winter-worn countries), but it’s one of the season’s most important trends, and we just can’t ignore it. and there were many ways to wear a pair...
