R.I.P. anita roddick
we were in the office this morning making chismiss on the phone (take note, on the much-neglected landline) with a friend, telling her how she missed seeing her crush roger federer on the today show, when she trumped our news by blurting, "anita roddick is dead." whaaat?! why do all the good ones die?? she died monday at the age of 64 of a brain hemorrhage. we've met anita roddick a couple times when she came to the philippines—first, for the opening of the first the body shop store in glorietta 2 back in the mid 90s (forget the exact year). we even got to interview her and have our picture taken with her (cheap thrills! uy, naka-frame na 'yon...). then again a few years ago, when she had stepped down from running the company but remained on the board. she was here to talk to big company presidents and CEOs on how to make their businesses more "ethical" and "green" and "moral." she was a very good public speaker, very passionate and quite riveting. then last year, she sold the body shop to l'oréal for over a billion (!) dollars, a move that she was criticized for because her little mom-and-pop operation was the complete antithesis of huge global conglomerates (and nothing could be bigger than l'oréal in the beauty biz). many in the industry also questioned her anti animal testing stance. we remember interviewing an executive of another "all-natural" brand and compared it to the body shop, when he sniffed, "read their label. it says 'AGAINST animal testing,' not 'NO animal testing.' there's a big difference." ay taray! dame anita roddick, may your mission/vision of protecting the environment continue with us who remain on earth and can do something about it.
