R.I.P. liz claiborne

for those of you who didn't know, yes, liz claiborne is a real person. so we're talking about the demise of a person here, not a company—that's not quite possible because liz claiborne the company is one of the biggest in fashion and is well on its way to becoming the LVMH of america, acquiring brands here and there, like kate spade, narciso rodriguez, ellen tracy, dana buchman, juicy couture, C&C california, mexx, laundry by shelli segal, DKNY jeans, and lucky brand jeans, among others. betcha didn't know that. in fact, they're so big, they managed to lure our beloved tim gunn away from parsons (and from "project runway"?) to be their chief creative officer. anyway, liz claiborne the person was 78. she died tuesday, june 26 after suffering from cancer for many years.

no title

it's quite obvious the fash pack hasn't been blogging lately. duh. call it laziness. or lacking an opinion on anything. or too busy writing OTHER stuff (like hella work). or surfing the net for post-jail paris videos and pix to prove that she really has BROWN eyes (vanity contacts are not allowed in the clink). or sometimes we just prefer to read other people's blogs. to lurk, just click above where it says "next blog." you never know what you'll find...

mad about magazines

we've always been obsessed with fashion magazines. back in the day, there were no local glossy fashion magazines. the only magazine was panorama, a black-and-white newsprint magazine that came free with the manila bulletin every sunday (still does). (gosh, we feel like a lola reminiscing about the japanese time.) as a teenager, seventeen was our bible. we devoured everything about it and did everything it told us to do. if the girls wore striped knee socks with dr. scholl's, we wore it. if they said string beans were good for your hair, we'd eat it. and we had our favorite teen models: first it was jayne modean, then the fitzpatrick twins, then of course, phoebe cates (anyone remember these gals??). even whitney houston started out modeling in seventeen before becoming a druggie diva. then in college, we graduated to mademoiselle. we collected like four or five years' worth of that title, but had to sell them all because they were becoming a fire hazard! then of course, it shut down and, well, there goes our collector's editions, which could probably fetch hundreds of dollars today... finally when we went to fashion school in the 80s (ay, thunders!), we graduated to actually buying our own vogues (before that, we just borrowed mum's copies). and THAT we kept. of course most of them are kept in a bodega in our parents' house, and they keep threatening to sell them if we don't get them outta there because they need the storage space. well, WE don't have the space either! maybe we should do what this guy did and turn it into a business (warning: 10-minute pop-up video):

new news newsy: way-under-the-bridge lines

it was all over the internet today (well, actually yesterday) that roberto cavalli has signed up to produce a one-off collection for men and women for H&M. it will debut in the stores in november. meanwhile, over at tar-zhay, we all know that libertine is next in line for their go international initiative. that collection will be available starting next month till september. and it's been announced that alice temperley is the eighth designer to be signed up by target. here's a sneaky peek into that collection to launch in october:

and guess who's rumored to be the ninth designer to launch a tar-zhay collection by february 2008: paris-based american designer erin fetherston, she of the cute face, cute bangs, and cute dresses.

now open: chi spa

we were going to post about this last week after its formal opening friday, but our photos are god-awful, so bear with us. (so what else is new?? but no nasty comments please we've heard it all before!!) so there's a new spa in town, chi spa at EDSA shangri-la. but don't expect the one at shang mactan to have been transported into the middle of the city. this is like a mini version, more of a day spa than a destination spa. but they do offer the same services at—dig this—lower prices! (not that much cheaper, we're pretty sure.) they built a structure detached from the main hotel, as well as a separate driveway to ensure a discreet entrance. we're not sure because we were a bit disoriented, but the driveway must be located on the saint francis street side—or close to the corner. after you enter this lobby... ... and sign up at reception, you are led to a small elevator that will take you to the fourth floor. they took up a lot of guest rooms to make space for a couple floors of this. chi spa even has its own guest rooms, so that you can go straight to bed right after your treatment and stay overnight. it's beautifully designed, has just-right dimmed lights, and of course that relaxing spa aroma that you just want to inhale... and looky! something chi in shang mactan doesn't have: a mani-pedi room! hmmm, must sked foot spa, must sked foot spa... all this cost the hotel US$2 million dollars to build—yes, US dollars! and the icing on the cake? they got la presidenta to inaugurate! doesn't this woman have anything better to do?? (bet she got a treatment before anyone else too...)

R.I.P. gianfranco ferré

we were having breakfast this morning with the BBC in the background when we heard the news that italian designer gianfranco ferré had died on june 17, sunday. he was 62. that's still young! apparently he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage, which happened in milan last friday. it's a sad, sad day for fashion as gianfranco ferré is one of the last of the classic designers. his training as an architect showed in the structured and sculpted shapes of his designs. he was artistic director for christian dior from 1989-1996. we remember when we first met pepito albert back in the mid-90s, when he made a splash in the local fashion industry, he told us that gianfranco ferré was the designer he admired most. and you could tell with pepito's own very structured and sculpted designs. one of ferré's bridge lines used to be available here, GFF 001. there was even a freestanding store at the original greenbelt 1, when it was still a posh shopping destination. read the news here. view gianfranco ferré's last collection for fall/winter 2007-08 here.

lovin' lavera lifestyle

full disclosure: we timed our overnight stay at the boutique to coincide with the launch of lavera, a skin-care line made in germany that's 100% organic. a lot of people think that organic means vegetarian. not so. we've eaten organic chicken, which tastes no different from regular chicken, but you take comfort in the fact that the chicken was a happy chicken before it was slaughtered. so on the outside, these beauty products look, smell, and feel like any other product you buy and use, but the difference is in the ingredients. man, with so many products out there, it's no wonder we're confused! anyhoo, lavera hosted a lunch at antonio's, the charming house and garden converted into one of the most exclusive restos in tagaytay (as in, don't bother coming if you don't have a reservation). so here's what we learned from petra, the german lady from lavera who taught us all about the organic lifestyle... • lavera means "the truth" in latin, so when they say they're organic, it means that the products are made of the purest plant oils, herbs, and flower extracts. no synthetic preservatives, emulsifiers, detergents, and petroleum products.
• lavera products are not just organic, but vegan too—they are 100% animal- and cruelty-free.
• they use no artificial fragrances or colors.
• their sun-care line contains no oxybenzone and cetyl cinnamates, which are found in most other sunblocks. these ingredients accumulate in body fats and breast milk, and mimic the effects of estrogen, causing undesirable hormonal changes. so using regular sunblock can do more harm than good. yikes!
• lavera is available exclusively at marionnaud, mall of asia.

the fash packs...

...and goes to tagaytay lang naman. we just got back from an overnight stay at a chic boutique hotel there called the boutique bed and breakfast. it's a white boxy building just past the rotonda, on the way to alfonso, cavite. it opened late last year, and is owned by happy ongpauco and alana montelibano (remember the bungguan incident at nuvo a couple years ago with aiko melendez? that was them!). the boutique only has seven rooms, so this is hardly a place for kids. recommended for couples only. someone even called it a glorified victoria court—mas maganda lang nga ang view, haha! (at mas mahal! prices start at about P6,000.) in lieu of room numbers, the doors are labeled i lust, i dream, i escape, i dare, i surrender, i desire, and our room, i love. now how many pillows do you need on a bed? we're sure the chambermaid has a guide for this in every room: and check out the bathroom. perfect for exhibitionists. and if you're shy, you can hang up the brown nylon shield provided:
--->
but it's not quite opaque enough. the second-floor rooms' shower stalls are in plain sight for guests hanging out by the veranda, especially at night when the lights are on! be careful... (sorry, no picture, censored...) breakfast in bed can be served anytime of the day; you just fill up a form and submit it. since our room was on the ground floor, and leads to the veranda, we decided to have ours out there. now how would you like to have breakfast to this view? a better look at that view: check out the rest of the place:
the facade. this is what you look for when driving down the highway.
the lobby. the hotel's casually elegant interiors were designed by chat fores.
the front balcony. nice to sit here in the late afternoon and watch the cows graze on the field across the street. la lang, when life is hard, just imagine you're the cow.
the resto. they serve hawaiian barbecue cuisine. parang hindi bagay sa design.
the veranda. lovely view of taal. just try not to look up behind you, you might see someone taking a shower.
the back of the hotel. see the big, curtain-less windows? that's the shower stall.

filipino couture

have you checked out the latest posts in the forums of the fashion spot? they have a topic titled "filipino couture", which has been going on since 2004, and was recently revived after philippine fashion week. most of the members who posted were filipino or part-filipino, and live in different parts of the world, and a lot of them didn't even know we had a fashion industry! but of course pinoy pride prevailed and there were pats on the back all around. of course we had to laugh when somebody asked if louis claparols was male or female, and someone replied, "he's a guy, very pogi!" hahaha! (in fairness, totoo...) hey, someone even linked the fash pack! thanks, blackrose, whoever you are! and if you're wondering what other countries must think of our version of "couture," we think this comment from farren fashion said it best: "wow. is all i have to say. when i first saw filipino and couture together... i didn't know what to think. but i've been pleasantly surprised."
