R.I.P. ruslona korshunova

supermodel-in-the-making ruslona korshunova plunged to her death yesterday in an apparent suicide. she was 20. and to think next week would've been her 21st birthday. sad :-( in her short career (life), the kazakhstan-born model was best known for her long (as in butt-long) hair

NEW YORK (AP) -- A European Vogue cover model fell to her death from her Manhattan apartment building Saturday in an apparent suicide, published reports said.

Fashion model Ruslana Korshunova died Saturday in a fall from her apartment building in New York.

Ruslana Korshunova, 20, died around 2:30 p.m. in a fall from a building on Water Street, in Manhattan's Financial District, The New York Post, the Daily News and Newsday reported. The newspapers cited unnamed officials and police.

Police said the fall was under investigation. Korushnova's New York agency and a spokeswoman for medical examiners did not immediately return telephone messages.

Originally from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, the almond-eyed, flowing-haired Korshunova appeared in advertisements and on runways for such designers as Marc Jacobs, Nina Ricci and DKNY. British Vogue hailed her as "a face to be excited about" in 2005.

Her break came when modeling booker Debbie Jones noticed her while perusing an in-flight magazine article about Korushnova's hometown of Almaty, according to the Vogue report. Watch the scene where the model fell to her death »

"She looked like something out of a fairytale!" Jones told the magazine. "We had to find her and we searched high and low until we did!"

Fashion Scoops: Tanshy's Florence... Bryanbag... Blue Nnotes

Published: Monday, June 23, 2008

BRYANBAG: Move over Victoria Beckham and Imelda Marcos. Manila-based blogger Bryanboy just added his latest luxury handbag to a collection that already spans 100-plus pieces. This one happens to be named after him. Four months ago Marc Jacobs was photographed backstage at his fall 2008 show holding up an "I [heart] Bryanboy" poster and Bryanboy enthused over a women's ostrich skin handbag from the show on his blog. An e-mail subsequently sent by Jacobs to Bryanboy promised to name the bag in question the "BB" in the blogger's honor. Now, Jacobs appears to have made good on the promise.

Over the weekend, a series of posts on revealed photos of a DHL delivery slip from Marc Jacobs International, a large Marc Jacobs box, a portion of a handwritten note from Jacobs on the designer's personal stationery and a link to the Luisa Via Roma e-tail site offering pre-orders of a goatskin version of the Marc Jacobs "Sunburst BB Shoulderbag", with September delivery. And finally, images of the bag in question — or at least, the original prototype, Bryanboy told WWD, which he reports the designer told him was "not perfected, as it is the sample from the show" but was sent because Jacobs "felt that was somehow special in a way."

Bryanboy photographed himself holding the bag, with one of the images a mockup in which he "stars" in his own Marc Jacobs advertising campaign. So far, Jacobs has neither publicly confirmed nor denied that Bryanboy is a new muse. When asked if Jacobs named the bag after Bryanboy, a spokeswoman for the designer, Asa Larsson, reluctantly noted, "Allegedly so."

patis and galicano

last thursday evening, we attended "postura," an exhibit featuring clothes by patis tesoro and paintings by romulo galicano. patis tesoro is best known for her filipiniana creations, and we've seen her fashion shows, but we're not sure if she's ever had an exhibit of her body of work. and we say it's about time! every fashion student should see this exhibit and examine and study the artistry that went into every piece—the embellishments, embroidery, beading, painting, all done by hand. it's practically couture! even if you don't wear or design filipiniana, you can certainly appreciate the work and creativity that went into these ensembles.

"baro't saya. skirt with black and chinese red polka dots and big printed floral overskirt with piña leniuan bastos suksok black stripe inlay weaving. ting ting cojuangco collection"

meanwhile, there were a lot of galicano portraits on the green and yellow walls. a lot of high-society folk sit for potraits with him and he charges by the millions. not just that, we heard he charges by the square inch. this was one our favorites, serene, subtle, classic (and we noticed did not have his signature vertical line):

"portrait of kitkat, oil on canvas, 2000. fernando and kit zobel collection"

there's also an exhibit of patis's ninay dolls. we've never liked dolls, but you have to admire the effort put into the realistic miniaturized ensembles and tableaux. and they're for sale! look at this puffball, she must sit all day and do nothing:
"harana—the rules of courtship followed a strict code of conduct. a suitor's visit was strictly supervised, and a chaperone was always present. being allowed to perform a serenade inside the house meant that the suitor was accepted by the girl's parents as a prospective groom"

"postura: romulo galicano/patis tesoro" will be on exhibit at the metropolitan museum of manila, roxas boulevard till august 30, 2008

pretty in prints

when we were in hong kong two weeks ago, too bad we didn't get to see this, a double-decker tram all wrapped in an orla kiely print. it would've been really cool to ride this... we love her stuff, although we don't own any. we've seen a few items in rustan's—we wonder if they're still there...? anyway, if ikea ever decides to set up shop here, they might want to promote the opening by doing what they did in japan: deck out a whole train in ikea products. check out the kobe portliner monorail, which had each car wrapped in an ikea print, while the inside was completely furnished with more ikea prints. this was up for a month to promote the opening of the ikea store in port island last april—so sadly it is no more :-( wouldn't you love to see an MRT train painted in these crazy colors and prints? now what pattern can be wrapped around the edsa line? hmmmm...

welcome home, ces!

ABS-CBN senior correspondent Ces Drilon on Wednesday thanked all those who helped secure her release and two others late Tuesday night in Sulu.

"I want to thank everybody. Words are not enough to thank those who prayed for the professor, Jimmy, Angel, and myself," Drilon told reporters in Sulu before boarding a military chopper bound for Zamboanga City.

sex and the city

we felt like we were the only ones left who hadn't seen "sex and the city," so last night, before it ends its run, we caught the 7:35pm showing at power plant mall. although the movie felt more like a two-and-a-half hour extended finale episode of the HBO series, we enjoyed it and really liked it. we liked carrie, the girls, the fashion, the witty one-liners... now we would've LOVED it if it were not for those damn CUTS!!! who's responsible for this? who decides that the filipino audience is not ready or mature enough to see some nudity on the big screen or, jeez, a couple of men kissing?? just because a movie has the word SEX in it doesn't mean it's all about SEX. if they watched it, paid attention, and understood it, then they would know that the movie is all about LOVE. carrie said so. IN THE BEGINNING. AND ALL THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE. now if they were going to splice and dice a film, they could at least do it seamlessly, and not cut up bits of dialogue that make you go, whaaa?? right from the opening scene, as the four girls walked down the street and samantha spots this cute guy who goes straight to another cute guy and are about to kiss then cut! we knew this was going to be bad... so we also missed seeing scenes of a husband and wife making love, women's breasts, and a man's well-chiseled butt. watching the news, MTV, anything on TV really, and hello youtube all show way more than this. we knew we should've waited for the deebeedee... or for its run on HBO by next year...

what's new at greenbelt

weekends are for vegging, which means we rarely leave our house, but last saturday, we were supposed to meet someone in makati for dinner, so we found ourselves in greenbelt 5 to hang out and kill time. then we got the text that said dinner is postponed. dang! oh well, at least we got to see these...

patrice ramos's shop called paradi is finally open in greenbelt 5!

about a month ago, we saw the workers setting the glass squares onto the "fountain" in greenbelt 5. now we know what they were for: a light exhibition...

we were having coffee at cibo, greenbelt 5 when we spotted a bunch of fairies, clowns, uni-cyclers, and tall tall men down below! they were on their way up to the second-floor gallery for this:
the sign didn't say what time, though, but since we saw them at around 4pm, then the performances must be at 4:30pm or 5pm. the men on stilts still had a little time to relax...

you won't find any signs on the windows, only discreetly placed on the shelves... ...but most, if not all, of the SSI shops in greenbelt 4 are on sale. some up to 60%! maybe more! we got a pair of shoes at prada at 45% off, woo-hoo!

then we decided, might as well get a foot spa and pedi at henri calayag's new salon located right across greenbelt 2. hey, there he is! and since he was there, we decided to get a haircut too. all in all, it was a productive day we could've spent just vegging at home.

my pilipinas

today was the opening of rhett eala's exhibit called "my pilipinas." my pilipinas is also the name of his T-shirt collection for collezione C2 that has the philippine map emblazoned in all sizes. the idea to use the map as a design element was like a lightbulb that just popped in his head one day. "you can't be too creative with T-shirts. when you add a design element, it has to be subtle. otherwise it won't sell," he told us. well, this one sold. and how! collezione owner joey qua says that people buy the map T-shirts by the dozens and often take them abroad as pasalubong. one foreign guest tonight was admiring the design on the shirt rhett was wearing (which of course had the philippine map on it), and was surprised to learn that it was a map! as a way to promote the line, rhett made 20 paintings using the philippine map as the theme. curated by artist impy pilapil, each painting, inspired by the likes of damien hirst, andy warhol, and david hockney, is priced at P80,000! we'll buy the T-shirt na lang at P300! some samples below.

the scary skulls:
the cute colors (or, as host carlos celdran called them, the murakami-esque collection):
and, oh yeah, the mixed-up maps:
"my pilipinas" will be on exhibit at the function room shared by cav and the spa at bonifacio high street till june 15
