let's eat: tosca

november 1 is one of those days in the year (along with holy thursday and good friday) when the streets of manila become a virtual ghost town (pun unintended)—except for roads leading to cemeteries. or out of town. speaking of ghost town, it reminded us of a place we ate in about a month ago. from this angle, doesn't it look like some fancy shmancy fine-dining restaurant abroad? well, it IS a fancy shamncy restaurant, but right in the heart of makati city: tosca, the italian restaurant of dusit thani manila. (that hotel sure has gone through many name changes. we remember it as manila garden hotel, hotel nikko, dusit hotel nikko, now dusit thani manila. what next??) the night we had dinner there, we were literally the only customers. that group at the bar? they work there. probably some expat executives having a drink after hours while inspecting the outlets. we wondered if it was always like that. kasi sayang sha. they renovated last year or a couple years ago and it's quite elegant. it can be a nice date place because it's dark, quiet, with a lone piano player in the corner tinkling the ivories. you might even want to go there if you don't want to, er, see and be seen (if you know what we mean ;-). smokers will be happy to know that there's a balcony where they can slip out for a quick smoke. our orders: we started with a caesar's salad (P301.42—we're listing the price on the receipt here. we didn't take down the price listed on the menu) and cream of asparagus soup (P243). very elegantly presented and tastes as good as it looks. main course: a duo of prawns and salmon (P553.74) and tiger prawns thermidor (P1059). we were pleasantly surprised with both these dishes. the seafood was fresh and the flavors quite subtle. we recommend these dishes on nights you don't want to leave the resto so full you just wanna roll outta there. our only beef (no, we didn't order any beef): the wine. we ordered a montepulciano d'abruzzo (P892). you might be thinking, red wine with seafood? well, we ordered the wine before the main course, and as a light red that's easy to drink, pwede na rin with seafood. medyo mahal ang wine (big markup, kasi mga P300 lang yan sa grocery). and the waitress who served it made a mistake in the sequence. after she opened the wine, she failed to pour a tasting portion in our date's glass (because he ordered the wine) and proceeded to pour into our glass first. oh well. nothing to whine (haha) about. total price: P3,763.98. whaaa?? how'd it get that big?? let's see: there's service charge, .80% local food tax, 3% local beverage tax, 12% food VAT, and 12% beverage VAT. don't say we didn't warn you...

tosca, dusit thani manila, ayala center, makati city, tel 867-3333 ext. 3919 and 3310

haha... we ate in tosca the day after the gretchen credit card thing and jokingly told them we had cash! hahaha

classy joint, nice food but didnt have wine (we have after dinners in our condo instead.. cheapskates)

overall, its present reincarnation as dusit has some pretty nice restos like umu and pricey benjarong to enjoy. pretty under-rated but still expensive nevertheless.
