doctor my eyes

boy, it is HOT out there. not to mention bright. walking to your neighborhood starbucks is getting to be an ordeal. protect your eyes from those evil UV rays with big bug sunglasses. the better to shield you from the prying eyes of the documentation generation, my dear. but the irony there is, the more you try to hide behind huge shades, the more conspicuous you become...

lesley mobo live

we're big fans of lesley mobo, that self-effacing young designer who was born and raised in aklan (yes, where boracay is), then left everything that was safe and comfortable and familiar, and flew to london to study fashion. look at him now: the only filipino designer at present who shows in paris every season under the jasmine di milo label. guess what, he's in manila and will present his collection tomorrow evening 7pm at greenbelt 5. this is something positive we can focus on. and something we can really be proud of. don't miss it!

we have to go to H&M next month!

oh my god, palpitations! the fash pack loves prints, and marimekko's are among our favorites, so we got extremely excited when we read about their collaboration with H&M! the announcement from marimekko last november 2007:

"Marimekko is licencing its patterns to H&M's summer 2008 collection.

Marimekko Corporation and H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB have today signed a license agreement whereby Marimekko licenses some of its popular patterns from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s to H&M's summer collection 2008. The impressive collection of around 50 products will be sold in H&M stores in 28 countries.

'Our design team has long admired Marimekko's vivid patterns and colours. When our designers came up with the idea of creating a collection with Marimekko patterns, it felt very natural and timely. The summer collection 2008 will be joyfully fresh like a vitamin injection,' states H&M's head of design Margareta van den Bosch.

'H&M is one of the trendiest and most successful fashion houses in the world. I see a great value in our co-operation. I believe that it will enhance Marimekko's international recognition among young and fashion-conscious consumers,' says Kirsti Paakkanen, President of Marimekko.

In addition to increased international visibility, licensing co operation with H&M will generate substantial non-recurring royalty earnings to Marimekko during the second quarter of 2008." here is the official press statement of H&M:

"H&M’S TRIBUTE TO MARIMEKKO

It’s all about the energy of summer. This season H&M brings a burst of life to the fashion scene with its tribute to Marimekko, the Finnish textile company that has thrilled since the 50s with its bold, bright colour. Using prints from the famous Marimekko archive to create 70 pieces for men, women and children, the H&M design team will take you all the way from the city street to the heat of the beach. The collection will be sold in H&M’s stores on all 28 markets from April 10, 2008. Selected parts of the collection will also be sold at 10 Corso Como Milan and 10 Corso Como Seoul, and at Dover Street Market in London.

Marimekko is well known for vibrant bold simple prints. It was fashion icon Jackie Kennedy that put Marimekko on the international map when she wore their dresses during her husband’s 1960 presidential campaign. Since then, Marimekko has always symbolised optimism and positivity, which makes it a perfect match for H&M.

'H&M’s design team has always admired Marimekko’s vivid prints and colours, and they feel so right for this season,' says H&M’s Head of Design Ann-Sofie Johansson. 'We came up with the idea of creating a summer collection built around the fun and joyful attitude of Marimekko’s vintage prints.'

Dipping into the massive 60s archive, the H&M design team have taken these fun retro prints and given them a very modern twist. Pinafores, smocks and shorts are the must-have women’s styles that sing out with holiday spirit. Certain designed pieces have been given extra detail for example three buttons on a cotton/silk mix apron dress. When it comes to the beach, the Tribute to Marimekko has both 50s-style one-piece swimsuits and bikinis, as well as sun-hats and versatile scarves that can be wrapped high on the head, or easily gathered into a sarong.

For men, the striking Marimekko stripes are used on what will become the favourite T-shirt of the season. There are also short-sleeve shirts and shorts in more intense prints. For children there are bright fun matching prints on apron dresses, sun-hats, skirted swimsuits and even a patterned teddy bear!"

we love it! sneak-peek sketches from H&M:

FWQ: cary santiago

we remember the first time we saw cary santiago's work. it was 2005 and we were in cebu for the opening of the timex factory in the city's industrial zone. the prez was there and we got a close look at her and noticed how yellow her teeth were. is she a smoker? she's in dire need of a teeth-whitening job. (well, then anyway. these days, she's too busy worrying about things other than her teeth.) but we digress. that evening at the shangri-la, there was a fashion show featuring models and celebs like piolo pascual wearing cebu designers and timex watches. and there was one gown that really stood out: it was a deep purple gown and if we remember correctly it had long sleeves—that in itself made it stand out in a sea of straplesses, spaghetti straps, and halter necks. but it was the way the sleeves hugged the arms, the way the whole gown wrapped around the body. it looked like a complicated construction with all these subtle detailing, little shirring, pintucking, and ruching, and rows of tiny covered buttons. in other words, madugo. it was almost like a piece of sculpture. we thought to ourselves, some fashion magazine better snap that up and put it on a cover. (a few months later, preview did.) later, he joined a young designers competition whose theme was terno, and he fashioned one covered entirely of feathers; only they weren't feathers. each "feather" was actually a piece of shaved wood treated to look like a feather. talk about madugo! who was cary santiago, we had never heard of him! as we all found out later, he's a designer from cebu who honed his craft in the middle east (and we know how crazy the women can get with their gowns over there). eventually, cary became the darling of the fashion press, but never quite overexposed. he went on to delight us with his laser-cut details, drapes, intricate peek-a-boos, layered strips.

photos to follow! bagal ng internet!

UPDATE: some photos from the all-jersey collection shown last thursday. you'll see what amazing things he did with the fabric, the way he twisted, draped, and manipulated it. and we gotta say, those clothes looked good coming and going, and we're pretty sure they look good too inside out. but, sad to say, most of the clothes will only look good on perfect, model-like bodies, so bodies like ours, which bulge at all the wrong places, should fuhgedaboudit:

the greenbelt 4 spring/summer (?) show

as is the tradition in greenbelt 4, at the beginning of the season, they hold a mini fashion show to present the current collections. (although they had to cancel 2007's fall/winter show as it was scheduled on the day trillanes decided to "check in" at the pen.) so tonight, we were looking forward to a real fashion show, kahit mini lang. instead we got an accessories show. the brands presented were mostly SSI—wait, it was all SSI, save for bulgari, pero pareho na rin 'yon, same owner—and mostly bags. the models wore either black shifts or black unitards (the better for you to see the bags, my dear), and for the jewelry portion, white jersey dresses (black might have been better. diamonds look better against black, and those dresses were nakakasilaw na puti). and so we saw the bags... not that much variety... and nothing that exciting...nothing really caught our eye... we were more intrigued by this lady across us. in fairness, ang ganda ng bag niya ha. real kaya? sa kanya kaya??anyway, back to the bags... can somebody please tell us, are all these bags REALLY from the spring/summer 2008 collections??well, let's just say that last december, after lunch at M café, we walked through greenbelt 4 to get to our car. as we passed by gucci, we saw this dress in the window and we really really liked it so we whipped out our camera and took a shot.aba, as soon as we did, we were accosted by the plainclothes guard and told, bawal kumuha ng peekchure. talaga, bakit? basta bawal. ah, ganon, ok, anyway we can see this same dress naman on style.com, in ads, and in editorials in all the international fashion magazines. and guess what, we got to see it up close tonight. so there. :-P but there was one really new, really exciting bag we spotted tonight. looky! it's the new weekender PM!they brought in only one piece for the show and if you want to buy it, sorry, but it was previously reserved already. sorry too to the three or so women in the event who wanted to purchase it right there and then. order now! only P118,000!
