opening: pepper lunch, shang

pepper lunch at shangri-la plaza has been open for a little over a month now, but last night was its formal launch. it was a pepper launch! located at the food court, basement level, the party was in full swing when we got there. bianca valerio was hosting a demo of several personalities cooking their version of their favorite pepper lunch dish. unfortunately, we missed senator alan peter cayetano and designer mich dulce. but we caught restaurateur elbert cuenca and fashion-show director robby carmona.

they also put up this fun photo booth that took four photos of you against the pepper wall. some guests got really creative! then after the ribbon-cutting, there was a mad dash to the counter to get some pepper dinner! the queue snaked all the way out, but the staff were quite efficient so the wait was not that long... congratulations, cecile and jeroen!

it's a bad time for magazines

the magazine biz worldwide is one of the most affected by the recession. advertisers are trimming their budgets and sticking with tried-and-tested titles, readers are no longer buying magazines, publishing houses are downsizing staff. because of this, many international titles have been shuttered. sad... we've also been hearing of local magazines shutting down since late last year (but amazingly, new ones popping up from nowhere). but today we got the saddest news of all: our favorite magazine domino is closing! waaah!! :'-( we've never missed an issue since it launched in april 2005. its last issue will be march. what will happen to our subscription now...

lanvin eyewear

just in time for summer (uy summer na daw kasi mainit na, bah!) was the launch of lanvin eyewear yesterday afternoon. the usually quiet hotel celeste lobby was a-buzz with activity as cicou was the venue for the event. but since the french restaurant was too small to accommodate the media, the staff, the event participants (host, models, musicians), the retail partners, and assorted amigas of the distributor, the crowd spilled into the lobby. we remember the logo above from when we were kids and our mom had a bottle of aprege perfume on her shelf. we used to stare at it a lot, making up stories about the woman and child. here's the host daphne oseña-paez, looking perfectly lovely for an afternoon party: isn't she simply glowing?? must be that big balenciaga bling around her neck ;-) now let's see some specs...

and something for the boys (or should we say for the the girls, hehe...)...

and this style got the most attention: swarovski-studded frames that come in blue and red. and for P29,000 you can be the center of attention too...
lanvin eyewear available at perez optical (libis, galleria, alabang town center, glorietta, harrison), eyepod (north edsa, megamall), j. vinias optical (shangri-la), vivian sarabia optical (mall of asia, megamall), sarabia optical (rockwell), good vision (megamall), sarabia optical (greenbelt, trinoma, serendra), grand vision optical, diane optical

kong hei fat choi!

welcome the year of the earth ox! your forecast for 2009:

OX
1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

Zodiac’s Nature:
Hard working, strong, down to earth, reliable, courageous, quiet, loyal, intelligent, helpful, self-confident, easygoing & brilliant in organizing. A natural-born leader who works systematically though can be a little slow. Is responsible towards family and believes in authority. Sometimes may be too stubborn and not open to changes and new ideas.

People born in the year of the Ox are said to be offending the Grand Duke (Tai Suey). Financially, it is not an optimistic year. They should avoid putting their money in high-risk investments. They have to be cautious when engaged in business; they must clearly read and double check any contract or documents before signing, Apart from this, they should avoid lending money to others. It is lucky that there is a Creative Star that shines bright; if Oxen are smart enough, they can still earn abundant money within the year. In love affairs, single ladies should be cautious and not fall into a love trap. Married couples should reach a mutual understanding to avoid quarrelling. Regarding health, they should keep away from sharp objects and practise road safety. Pay special attention when driving in the highway; try to avoid talking on the phone. Try to avoid any dangerous sports. The young generation, especially, should avoid too much nightlife.

It is a good year for Tigers to develop their business. Due to the shining of the lucky star, it is lucky for them to work abroad. On the other hand, due to the influence of the lonely star, they have to be careful to handle relationships with clients, colleagues and benefactors. Money luck is quite promising and stable. It is important that they be more conservative in handling their work or business, thinking thoroughly before they act. In love affairs, due to the romantic star under the sign, single female Tigers may meet their dream lover and may get married this year. Married Tigers will have the chance to have a newborn baby in their family. Because of the presencef the sickness star, Tigers should be conscious of personal hygiene and watch their diet. It is important that they should have enough sleep and do proper exercise.

This is not a good year for them to start their own business, or to switch jobs. In love affairs, single Rabbits should not expect too much--it is better to concentrate on their work. Married Rabbits should treasure their love life and try to be patient with each other. Rabbits should avoid going to funerals and wakes. If they work in construction, they should be extra careful. Dragons should grasp the good opportunity during the lunar months of March, June, September and December to invest, in order to reap good harvest by year-end. Love affairs are not promising. Married couples may quarrel more, so they should respect and honour each other. Single Dragons should not expect too much in love—they should not trust people too easily. Overall, this year is luckier for male Snakes than the female Snakes, so female Snakes should not be moody. It is important that they have to do more for charity within the year to balance their luck. Money luck is very good because of the presence of the Treasure star; they are able to manage their finances well. Business is quite optimistic, but they must be cautious when engaging in contracts; otherwise they may be involved in a court case. In love affairs, single Snakes may not dream lovers this year. Dogs should be active in social gatherings and communicate more with friends. Single Dogs should pay attention to the people around them; they might have unexpected surprise in love affairs. the terrace at 5th opening

there's no stopping greenbelt 5. they keep dreaming, so they keep building. stop dreaming na! last night was the formal opening of another new restaurant there called the terrace at 5th. parang fifth floor. or fifth avenue? terrace is located outside phase 2, facing greenbelt 2, so they have outdoor seating and a garden view. must be lovely during the daytime. we should go back on another day to have a proper meal because the place was packed inside and sweltering outside. we want the cold weather back, waah! terrace is co-owned by chef cecille ysmael (who also co-owns and cooks at thai at silk in serendra); other partners include ivy and cynthia almario (who designed the green-themed interiors), ching cruz, maricris zobel, carol garcia, and menchi soriano. so soshal! so you can expect manila's 500 present last night (and every night they hope). food is supposed to be home-cooked-style meals straight from their families' heirloom recipes. here's a shot of the facade (oops some sweaty guy walked in front of us!): here's cecille and proud hubby louie Y: and a smattering of the "500" who came:

sale! sale! sale!

we almost missed this as we walked through greenbelt 5 a few days ago... this is the "global" floor of adora. it's actually the ground floor right beside zara and right across aldo. it's hard to miss the huge green sign, but you just might miss the small entrance off to the side. when you enter, the space is small and full of clearance items of the lower-end brands. and who knew adora had its own lift! go to the third floor, which houses the women's merchandise. there you'll find the high-end sale items on the floor with little cards that indicate the discount. we were able to get a chloé bag at 50% off woo-hoo!

sale ends feb 28.

tod's s/s 2009

the other day, tuesday afternoon, tod's gave a press presentation of their spring/summer 2009 collection. it's defined by lovely colors—citrus, pastels, even neon. and even for the men's collection! these pre-spring pieces are already available in the greenbelt 4 store:

the rest of the collections will be in the store by late feb/early mar. like these: the new G bags, inspired by tod's current image model gwyneth paltrow (guess her campaign did the brand well; she's continuing on in the spring/summer ads):

these are the new neon bags made of scuba material:

and heels! who knew tod's made heels you could walk in all day. take note of the fine handstitching:

this particular sandal was everyone's favorite, but unfortunately, it won't be available in the philippines. the exotic lizard skin makes the retail price of HK$5,000 quite prohibitive for our market. but you can special order it at the store:
and lest we forget, there were lots of fun stuff for the men too. accessories! shoes! bags! this one below the women loved, a roomy shopper in the softest buttery leather: but here's the best part: an innovation that we wish all bags had—a mini-flashlight! why, the easier to find your stuff in the big black hole known as your handbag, my dear!

the new US first lady's dress

everyone has put their two cents in regarding the outfit michelle obama wore to the inauguration. so here's ours! first of all, great choice all around. we love isabel toledo's work. we also love her husband ruben toledo's work, especially his fashion illustrations. secondly, we love the color of the outfit. it suits the occasion, michelle's skin color, and everything it represents—optimism, hope, happiness, sunny, sunshine, spring, summer, etc etc. and it's a great way for her to introduce herself to the world. we even liked the choice of shoes and gloves (but wasn't she freezing with those bare legs??). now here comes the critique. first of all, it was too sprarkly. with an attention-getting shade like that (call it lemongrass, not maize please), you don't need any more borloloy (or bling whatever) to make it stand out. plus it was a daytime event. (well, in fairness, a day-to-evening event.) the fabric had some sort of shiny overlay or had some beading or sequins. if we bought this ensemble, we probably wouldn't wear the shift and coat together; we'd break it up. we thought that sparkly neck thing was not necessary. secondly, the length of the coat—it could've used a little hemming. it looked dowdy from where we were in front of our TV set. in our opinion, it should've been slightly shorter than the dress—it would've looked more flattering. as it is, michelle is a big woman and that length just made her look gigantic, with the coat swishing and flapping about her as she walked. having said all that, brava, michelle! welcome to the white house!

what did YOU think??

today was just like any other saturday

today is a saturday. for most people, saturday is considered ME time. we're no different. after five days of being pulled from all sides, people from everywhere fighting for your attention, calls and texts that beg to be answered, deadlines that must be met, meetings to attend, and dealing with general ineptness, come the weekend, you just want to have a lie-in. however, today there were two reasons for us to leave the house: tim yap's birthday breakfast and the launch of two new bench fragrances to benefit pink for life (wow, bench is really busy!). unfortunately, we missed both. first of all, we woke up late. definitely too late for breakfast, but just in time for lunch. well, after lunch you just want to go back to bed and have a siesta. before we knew it, it was 5pm, time to leave for the launch and, well, we were still in our jammies. so we apologize to tim and mons and ben. please accept our *sorry!*

to adidas and back

today we trekked all the way to trinoma to attend the press con of adidas's house party, which is happening on feb 27, 7pm at embassy superclub—it's to celebrate adidas's 60th anniversary. can we just say it took us 30 minutes to get to trinoma from makati. but going back to makati took an hour and 45 fucking minutes! get rid of those damn pink fences already!!! and those useless bus bays, which buses don't use anyway!!! but we digress... at today's event it looked like some of the staff were coerced to model the new collection...

meanwhile we got to shop the store with everything on sale from 30-70% off—but only during the event. unfortunately, there was nothing we really really wanted. we're not so much into sporty stuff (although we should—as in should exercise), but we love wearing trainers no matter how butt-ugly they are because they are just so damn comfortable. however, there were some un-sporty things that caught our eye...

cute, 'no?
