greenbelt 5 rooftop

around three weeks ago, we had a shoot at the palawan suites of makati shangri-la. while looking out the windows, we spotted this unusual thing on the makati-avenue side—something green in the middle of all that dreary gray concrete: the lower half of the photo is ayala museum and above that is... greenbelt 5?! wow, let's take a closer look... is that—gasp!—grass?? ayala is actually doing something green?? literally and figuratively. to deserve to be called a "green belt." we're really curious about this rooftop. we didn't know it even existed. is it accessible to customers? pwede bang mag-picnic jan? parang maganda mag-fashion shoot jan... we tried googling for some information on this, but could not find anything, not even in their not-exciting website. can anyone enlighten us please?

domino's done

we are one of those people who deeply laments the demise of domino magazine. last month, they released their last issue without any indication that it was their last, not even a goodbye letter from the editor in chief. buti pa yung marie claire philipines, myrza got to say goodbye and thank you to their readers. now what shelter magazine are we gonna buy?? we love elle decoration (UK edition), but it's just too damn expensive, we resort to scrounging for back issues in book sale or mio magazine shop. maybe we'll just buy real living (philippine edition, not australian edition, para mura!), the most user-friendly local shelter publication. apparently, this blogger style redux lamented more deeply than we did that she came out with a faux cover for what she fantasized the domino april issue might look like! then two weekends ago, while doing some home improvement, we decided to go to the domino website for some inspiration. we were diverted to the architectural digest website and found this letter:

Dear Domino magazine reader,

Thank you for trying to visit the Domino magazine Web site. Sadly, Domino magazine and www.dominomag.com are no longer being published and the My Deco File application has shut down. You’ve been redirected to the Web site of Domino’s sister publication Architectural Digest.

Like dominomag.com, ArchitecturalDigest.com is home to inspiring photography, helpful design resources, tips and interviews with top architects and designers, plus galleries of unique furniture, art, tapestries, and other treasures.

We’d like to encourage you to explore ArchitecturalDigest.com by visiting some of our most popular features listed below. You can also sign up for our newsletter to receive the latest architecture, design, and celebrity homes delivered directly to your inbox.

We hope you will grow to love both our Web site and Architectural Digest magazine.

Domino magazine sweepstakes notification:
We regret to inform you that the My Deco File Paris Sweepstakes, My Deco File Daily $100 Grandinroad.com Gift Card Sweepstakes, and the Domino Deals $2,000 Target Shopping Spree Sweepstakes will not launch as promoted in the March 2009 issue of domino.

how sad! what a lame attempt at a goodbye? an apology? a sales pitch?? then yesterday, since we subscribed to domino directly through the condé nast website, we received this notice in the mail:

Dear The Fash Pack,

With regret, we have decided that we will no longer be publishing Domino.

In its place, we will be sending you Glamour, starting with the August 2009 issue, for the duration of your remaining Domino subscription term.

We think you'll love Glamour, especially if you haven't seen it lately. Like Domino, it's geared toward smart, style-savvy women like you, with inspiration and tips on fashion, hair & beauty, health & diet, and sex & relationships.

new new soul

last thursday, the face shop launched a new new soul fragrance. actually four of them—soul secret blossom, soul sweet pleasure, soul wish upon a star, and soul essential for men. parang from the name pa lang, you can more or less tell what each one smells like—light and breezy. but feel free to sniff them out for yourselves at the store. they always have testers that you can spray...

they also launched a new makeup collection for spring/summer. nice packaging!

they had some celebrity endorsers present at the launch held at dimensione's third-floor space in bonifacio high street. we spotted isabel daza (daughter of former miss universe gloria diaz—parang how passé to always identify her that way, noh?), bianca king, and iya villania... ...as well as these pretty young thangs who modeled the "loooks"... ...and these cute promo gals in matching outfits who handed out the giveaways... and can we mention that they had a little gimmick where you had to write in a post-it how you would finish this sentence: "if i were 15 again, i would..." and we answered: "...wear a two-piece bikini and become a bench body model." our answer was picked and we had to go up front to read it, ngek! and we were hoping we would win a prize or something! or something!! ;-)

vogue may 2009

several days ago, we received our US vogue subscription for may 2009. shock! awe! not just one but NINE models on the cover. well, of course only three are actually on the front; the rest are tucked into the gatefold. the last time vogue did this was exactly two years ago, when they heralded "the world's next top models." this issue should be a collector's edition because not only are models on a fashion-magazine cover a rarity these days, there is not a single celebrity featured inside! it's all about models models models! but that is not the real groundbreaking thing vogue did. this must be the first time in the history of any vogue to put a black woman on the cover for THREE consecutive issues! first it was US first lady michelle obama in march, then superduperstar beyoncé in april, now supermodel liya kebede in may (never mind that she's sharing space with two caucasians). (come to think of it, if you count the inside flap, there are TWO black women on the cover, the other being jourdan dunn.) to think before this, the last time vogue put a black person on the cover, which was in april 2008, it wasn't even a woman! of course in this day and age that shouldn't be a big deal anymore. especially with a black man now residing in the white house. but the media—especially american media—like to make a big deal out of any story that involves race. so will vogue make it four in a row? we doubt it. according to the cover-rumor-thread forum on thefashionspot.com, cameron diaz will be on the june cover of US vogue. bakeeet??? well, probably because a blue-eyed blonde sells better than any other type of beauty and probably because her new movie "my sister's keeper" will be out.

today is earth day

the fash pack cares about the earth and do what we can in our own little way to keep her liveable not just for ourselves, but for future generations as well. here is a piece we wrote on earth day 2006. we thought it was worth a re-print:

saving the environment isn't all about planting trees and saving whales. if you think that you, as an individual, can't do anything for mother earth, you can't be more wrong. a little change in your lifestyle and altering your mindless choices might seem like it won't make a difference, but imagine if millions of other people did the same? here are 10 simple things you can do everyday that in the long run will benefit you, your children, your grandchildren, the environment, the planet, the future!

1. if you're having coffee at starbucks "for here," ask to have it in a mug instead of a paper cup.
2. when ordering fast food for delivery or to-go, just take what you need. if you don't need the plastic utensils or extra chili flakes, ask the staff to remove them.
3. if you're loyal to certain brands of shampoo, body lotion or mayonnaise, buy them in the big bottles. lots of small bottles = lots of trash.
4. when you go shopping, bring your own lightweight tote to stash all your purchases, instead of having each one wrapped in a plastic bag. or if your purchase is tiny, just toss it into your purse.
5. never never never throw your rubbish out your car window! on the ground! into any available orifice! we've seen plastic cups tossed out of cars, potato-chip bags strewn on the sidewalk, and candy wrappers thrust into vases, flower pots and water pipes. would it hurt you to hold on to them till you find a proper trash bin?
6. if you have a computer that accepts faxes, just receive and store them there instead of printing them out.
7. you may not know it, but shopping for clothes at garage sales, segunda mano and ukay-ukay is actually a form of recycling. why buy new when old and used are still in pretty good shape?
8. while we're on the subject of recycling, reduce, reuse and recycle as much as you can. use grocery bags as bin liners. use the back of memos as scratch paper. use your empty absolut bottles as water bottles!
9. update your wardrobe by making your own accessories with found objects around your house. we're lucky fashion today is all about individuality and uniqueness and character.
10. use less water: shut the faucet while brushing or shaving, fix leaks, water plants in the evening, and take shorter showers!

banana rep s/s 2009

banana republic sure has come a long way. we remember back in the 80s when banana republic used to be a humble catalog, printed in brown kraft-like paper, featuring safari- and trekking-type clothing that were not even photographed but drawn. each item was described in detail and where you might want to wear it and made you fantasize about wearing those belted khaki jackets and cargo trousers while traveling to some exotic destination. then banana republic was bought by the gap and the whole image changed. gone were the adventure fantasies and in their place, er, corporate fantasies. the clothes became so straight-laced and, well, boring for lack of a better word. it looked like everybrand. we were no longer interested.

last thursday, banana republic in greenbelt 5 presented their spring/summer 2009 collection. sure, there were some cute pieces, perfect for summer, for both men and women. but somehow the romance and character and uniqueness of the brand is gone. poof. it's been over 20 years since those catalog days. we miss those catalogs. we wish we kept them...

good news about bags

BBC's rico hizon is our facebook friend and everyday his status is always some feel-good update from goodnewspilipinas.com. most of the time it's about the philippines being voted the most this or the best that, or about filipino athletes and entertainers, or about half-filipino achievers from all over the world. then today he posted something about a bag designer:

"Rico Hizon The bags of a Filipino icon in bag designing is now on show at the World’s Biggest Museum of Bags and Purses in the Netherlands. Details on: http://goodnewspilipinas.com/wp/?p=5027. Proud to be Pinoy!"

could it be aranaz? or celestina? or rafe totengco?? but when we clicked on the link, were we surprised:

Dutch Museum showcases Cora Jacob’s bags
Posted on April 17th, 2009
under We are Pinoys!

A Filipino icon in bag designing is now on show at the world’s biggest museum of bags and purses in the Netherlands.

Cora Jacob, is first-ever Filipino to grace the prestigious Tussenmuseum Hendrikje or the Museum of Bags and Purses.

She is well-known for introducing Filipino craftsmanship to exclusive fashion houses like Dior, Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent in Paris, and her designs also graced the shelves of New York’s Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s as well as other chic boutiques in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The lawyer-turned bag designer was invited by no less than the director and curator of the world’s biggest museum of bags.

The exhibition entitled Woven Chic Spring-Summer Collection 2009, features eight different lines of bags made of shells, crystal beads, sequins, pearls and other materials woven onto buntal fabric.

Made of indigenous Philippine materials, Jacob’s bags stand alongside those dating from the late 16th century to present day at the Tussenmuseum Hendrikje or Museum of Bags and Purses in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Sigrid Ivo, daughter of museum founder Hendrikje Ivo, was impressed by the colorful collection inspired by tropical themes like the sea, lush forests, tropical fruits and the sun.

“Even in Netherlands, there are craftsmanship that are already lost that is why I am very happy to see old craftsmanship in modern designs. The materials are very elegant and unusual that we don’t even know here in Europe that is why they are very interesting.” adds Sigrid.

The collection impressed even Madame Martine Louise Amélie van Loon née Labouchere, the Mistress of the Robes to Queen Beatrix (closest confidante of the queen), who graced the ribbon cutting.

Woven Chic, Cora Jacob Summer-Spring Collection 2009, will be displayed at the Museum of Bags and Purses until May 3.

from memory, cora jacob was one of the first names to turn the lowly filipino native bag into something fashionable. before aranaz, celestina, or even rafe totengco came into the picture, cora jacob was already an established bag designer who exported her collections to europe. and during those days, the local market had yet to appreciate our native materials and wear them with pride. kasi back then, parang baduy, or parang pang matanda, or parang probinsyana. but these days, we won't hesitate to carry a banig tote bag everyday or to pair a shell-encrusted clutch with our evening gown. have our tastes matured, evolved, developed...? or have we simply matured, evolved, developed as filipinos who appreciate and take pride in our own...?

for more information on the exhibit, go here.

adidas flagship opens

haay, the things that happen when you aren't looking... in the blink of an eye (well, a long, slow, giant-eye blink), the marks & spencer store in greenbelt 3 closed down and moved out and moved into greenbelt 5. and in its place, a new adidas flagship store, which had its formal launch this afternoon. is that roger federer in the window doing some dumbbell exercises? when you enter the store, the first thing you notice is adidas's signature three stripes in the ceiling. then walls of shoes... mannequin displays (often in threes)... and the new stella mccartney collection! cute display and cute collection! pang isports ba talaga ito?? then a fashion show with some famous faces. daw. wala kasi kaming alam sa isports eh. pero show biz oo. ganda ni angel at ni iza! (note to self: do NOT stand next to these women during photo ops.) then a raflle and guess what, we won! a basketball! i guess it's time for us to get into, er, isports...

PS: get this giant adidas logo plush pillow for free! of course, you have to buy P10,000 worth of adidas originals merchandise first...
