free carlos celdran

every important cause needs a carlos celdran who will take extreme measures in order to be heard and taken seriously. we may not condone his defiant act today, but we certainly support his message. as he said, as he was sitting in jail, after he was arrested (and we paraphrase), "i apologize for the method, but i don't apologize for the message." those words will resonate when people take to the streets and continue to push for the passing of the RH bill. go, president aquino! don't allow the catholic church to bully you and tell you how to run this country! your bold decisions may anger a few, but in the long run will improve the quality of life of the filipino.

In RH war of words, activist confronts bishops in church

09/30/2010 | 06:14 PM

Famed Manila tour guide and reproductive health advocate Carlos Celdran was detained by Manila police on Thursday for disrupting a mass at the Manila Cathedral, where he staged a protest action against the bishops' opposition to the reproductive health bill.

Dressed as Jose Rizal, Celdran stood in front of the Manila Cathedral altar during a mass, holding a sign bearing the words "Damaso." MARIZ UMALI

Dressed as Jose Rizal, Celdran stood in front of the Manila Cathedral altar during a mass with Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and several bishops present, holding a sign bearing the words "Damaso" -- a reference to the villainous friar from the novel "Noli Me Tangere."

He screamed, "Stop getting involved in politics" before he was taken away by the police at around 4:30 p.m.

Manila Cathedral rector Msgr. Nestor Cerbo said that Celdran was guilty of "disruption of worship, which is a very sacred thing which should be given utmost respect."

"To make a scene and call that freedom of expression? That is pagbabastos," added Cerbo.

At around 8:15 p.m. the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines filed charges against Celdran for violation of Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code, which prohibits "offending religious feelings."

The exact text of the article says that "the penalty of arresto mayor in its maximum period to prision correccional in its minimum period shall be imposed upon anyone who, in a place devoted to religious worship or during the celebration of any religious ceremony, shall perform acts notoriously offensive to the feelings of the faithful."

Aside from leading popular walking tours of Manila's historical spots, Celdran is also a vocal advocate of the Reproductive Health Bill. He has used his blog, Facebook account, and Twitter account to criticize the Catholic church for its stance against artificial contraceptives and sex education.

Police said it was Mayor Lim who ordered that Celdran be taken into police custody.

"Nandoon si Mayor Lim sa misa eh. Nilapitan siya ng pari. Ang nagmimisa doon, sundalo at mga police. Kinuha (si Celdran) ng mga pulis na nakikinig ng misa," said SPO2 Ernesto Andres, desk officer of the PCP Intramuros.

In a telephone interview, Celdran told GMANews.TV that the police were treating him well. "I think I got them on my side, because I told them the reason why I did this," he added.

"The fact the police are in semi-agreement with my cause, although they cannot do anything about it, shows how much people want the RH bill to be passed and how much the church should stop getting involved in politics and stop threatening the president," he added.

Pres. Aquino said today that he was unfazed by threats from the Catholic church to excommunicate him unless he changes his position that the state should respect the choices couples will make when planning their families.

At around 6:00 p.m., Celdran was transferred from Intramuros to the police community precinct in Ermita. "Doon sila maga-areglo," Andres said.

Celdran was placed in handcuffs during his transfer to the MPD Station 5 in Ermita. MARIZ UMALI.

At around 7:00 p.m., GMA News reporter Mariz Umali tweeted that Carlos was placed behind bars while waiting for charges to be filed. She later said that Celdran would stay in jail overnight and possibly into the next day.

This photo taken around 7:00 p.m. shows Celdran, still in full Rizal costume, behind bars at the Manila Police District Station 5 in Ermita. MARIZ UMALI.

Last Tuesday, President Aquino announced that he would continue to support responsible parenthood and informed choice in family planning.

"Even during the [the presidential] campaign the president already stated his position on the matter. It's more of responsible parenthood. We believe that parents should be the one to decide on the size of their family, the manner and the method by which the planning should be done," said presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.

In response, Catholic bishops threatened to stage protests if the reproductive health bill is passed into law. - YA/HS, GMANews.TV

australia's next top model host announces wrong winner!

this video is making the rounds on blogs, facebook, and twitter! now what would YOU do if it happened to you??

In what has to be a moment that television show hosts far and wide dread more than a faulty teleprompter, 'Australia's Next Top Model' host Sarah Murdoch, daughter-in-law of media magnate Rupert Murdoch, announced the wrong winner on live television.

Murdoch named 19-year-old Kelsey Martinovich as the winner per real-time audience voting, but two-minutes later paused with a panicked look on her face after it appears a producer breaks the news to her through her in-ear speaker.

According to Huffington Post, the real winner, 18-year-old Amanda Ware, will be signed with modelling agency Priscilla's, receive a $25,000 contract to appear in a Levi's campaign, visit New York to meet with ELITE agency, get a Ford Fiesta Zetec, $20,000 cash and pose for an eight-page spread for Harper's Bazaar Australia.

In light of the flub up, Kelsey will also be sent to New York and given $25,000.

metrowear bridal: cary santiago

the fash pack's metrowear saga continues! last night's show was held at the marriott hotel and thank god, our name was on the guest list this time, and we were given seat assignments, and the show didn't start that late, but when we saw where seat FFF was... well, let's just say that it was in the very last row, about two feet away from the exit door, and we had a good view of, er, the photographers' butts. ooh this was not acceptable... we wanted to get a closer look at cary santiago's work... the organizers couldn't help us because all seats had been assigned... luckily, we spotted JC buendia, randy ortiz, and tonichi nocom, and after beso-beso, they said that their fourth companion decided to sit somewhere else and offered us her seat. and they were in the third row at the end of the catwalk, woo-hoo!

ok drama aside, take a look at cary's work! this guy must be an alien or something! or he must have a hundred little elves who work for him and do nothing but press those pleats flatly and evenly! the precision in his cuts is astounding. the fit on the models' bodies is incredible. and the workmanship will just blow you away. click on the pix to enlarge and scrutinize the details!

happy birthday, tessa

today, tessa valdes featured her **th birthday party in her column in the philippine daily inquirer and the fash pack was there! tessa is a super-fun personality and that is reflected in everything she does—from the crazy way she dresses to the wild theme parties she hosts. well, since she IS a celebrity, people want to host parties for her and this was actually her second birthday party this month. the one we attended was hosted by anton san diego, one of the owners of the establishment at the fort. it was supposed to be a couples-themed dinner and attire requested was black and pink. plus after-dinner karaoke! our photos are by no means complete, there were so many more guests we didn't get to shoot!

ben de lisi home

fashion designer ben de lisi first gained international recognition when kate winslet wore a red gown by him at the oscar awards in 2002, when she was nominated for her supporting role in "iris." although she didn't win, that gown has made it into many "best oscar gown" lists. today, the london-based american designer is best known for his work with debenhams. while the clothes collection is classic and very wearable, the home line is absolutely adorable! check out these super-cute pillows any dog- or cat-lover will die to own—presenting the noah and lily cushions:
how about this jonathan-adler-ish bulldog (or is that a pug?) lamp? irresistible!
we really like this funky bedsheet set, designed with the urban dweller in mind:

let's eat: la piadina

filipinos love italian food, no doubt about it, but most italian food we get to eat here have been "altered" to appeal to filipino taste buds. nothing wrong with that, but if you're looking for something a little more "authentic," but in a casual setting, head on over to la piadina. la piadina isn't new, though; in fact, it's been around for 12 years. they used to have a fast-food stall in glorietta's food court till they moved about a month ago into this new location (pictured above) in glorietta 4. it's located on the second floor, right across jollibee. you'll recognize it immediately from the distinct boot-shaped map of italy outlined on the window!

it's owned and operated by former supermodel tetta ortiz and her italian husband giorgio matera (pictured above), who handles the food part of the business. for this new branch, they came up with a new concept. instead of just churning out the usual pizzas and pastas (which they also serve, of course), they decided to divide the menu into regional specialties—that's why the resto is called la cucina regionale italiana. they picked the four most popular regions known for its food: emilia romagna region, piemonte region, toscana region, and puglia region (where giorgio is from).
aside from this la piadina, they also have a branch in tokyo, where tetta used to live and work and where she actually met giorgio. he had a successful catering business (which he still has today) in tokyo; so successful that he was awarded in rome by then-president scalfaro as an ambassador of italian food and culture in a foreign country. below, just some of the la piadina dishes we got to try!

from the emilia romagna region: i cappellacci (homemade ravioli pasta with pumpkin and ricotta cheese filling):
from the piemonte region: le linguine ai funghi con olio di tartufo (long flat pasta with fresh mixed mushrooms, light cream and truffle oil):
from the toscana region: il risotto al pesto con scampi (italian-style rice cooked in pesto sauce with fresh shrimps and parmesan cheese):
from the puglia region: il trancio di tonno alle spezie (seared tuna fillet seasoned with herbs served with baked potato and mixed green salad):
la piadina is located at greenbelt 4, tel 501-3788, open everyday 11am-10pm

beauty blog: clarins shaping facial lift

we attended the small workshop for clarins' reformulated shaping facial lift, made especially for asian women who are prone to more round-ish face shapes. when the invitation said it was to be held at glorietta's grandmall area, we didn't realize it was really to be held in the middle of the mall!
we met jason au, the regional trainer based in singapore, who told us all about this new-ish product.
new-ish because we remember attending a workshop for this same product years ago. the gal from rustan's heard us and said, oh maybe when we had an event last 2007. and we said, er, no, it was more like back in the 90s... sure enough, clarins shaping facial lift was first released in 1998. back then, there were all sorts of "face palm" positions to follow while applying the product; that hasn't changed. in fact, they've added a part 2! it's called the "manual auto-lifting" method and it's pretty much the way they give you a facial in clarins institut, wherein the therapist gently presses your face to "drain" toxins away from your face. this pressing action is also supposed to "sculpt" your face by firming the cheeks, chin, and jawline. (hmmm maybe charice should use this to maintain her new, slimmer face...) apply this via the method every day, once a day, after toner and before moisturizer, and you can improve the contours of your face—or at least get rid of puffy cheeks, double chin, or sagging jawline. and don't be lazy like us!! (the enclosed booklet has the complete steps.)
clarins shaping facial lift (P3,950) available at all rustan's.
