the fash pack decided to take a one-week break from blogging. after that hostage drama that happened last monday, we just wanted to pay our respects to the eight hong kong tourists who died in that tragic incident by observing a moment of silence—only ours was a week long. ok, philippines, time to get your act together!

so let's get back to our regular programming starting with this video that as of today has over 2 million hits! you've probably all seen it, but we just want to post it for posterity! and for some laughs because we need it!!

august 23: a date which will live in infamy

yesterday was a sad sad day for our country and for hong kong. we cannot even begin to imagine the terror, confusion, and helplessness that those innocent people felt as they sat in that bus, wondering if it would be their last day on earth. for eight of them it was. how could it be that this bus full of tourists from hong kong, enjoying the last day of their holiday in manila, on their way to the ocean park, before catching their evening flight back home, gets flagged down by a crazed and desperate man? a man with a mission. and a gun. or guns.

like most people, we were glued to the telly all day yesterday, watching this real-life drama unfold less than a mile from where we live. hoping and praying that this deranged man would come to his senses and surrender and let his hostages free. hoping and praying that the authorities or whoever was in charge (was there someone in charge?) would know how to handle the situation in such a way that no one gets hurt. hoping and praying that it would end without any bloodshed. we all know how it ended...

how ironic is it that just a month and a half ago, when our newly elected president stood at the quirino grandstand, it became a symbol of hope and change. now it is a symbol of... what? death? murder? tragedy? stupidity? ineptness? and it was there for all the world to see.

what now? as citizens of this country, who encounter this type of incompetence every day, it's easy for us to lay blame. it's pretty obvious that our police force lacks training. forget about it being an embarrassment. the worst part of this incompetence is that it cost lives. innocent people's lives. people who came to our country because they thought it was worth a visit.

there are so many other things—negative things—we want to say about this whole hostage tragedy. but in the end, all we'll say is a prayer for the innocent lives lost yesterday.

the glamourai for forever 21

have you heard of the style blogger named the glamourai? she's a fashionable gal named kelly framel, who posts pix of herself wearing cute outfits. she's also an accessories designer, making mostly statement necklaces and big rings. check out her blog, cute outfits, and jewelry collection here.
for this season, forever 21 partnered with the glamourai (guess that means she's a glamour samurai..?) for the twelve by twelve collection. because they define kelly as being the "ultimate mixmaster" and "a seasoned pro at mixing desginer staples, unique vintage pieces, and statement F21/TBT finds" (hey, sounds like us!), they thought she would be the perfect muse for this new collection. get to know the glamourai with this little Q&A from forever 21's blog called the skinny:
Gives us a little behind-the-scenes insight on how the outfits were chosen.
When I arrived on set, the Twelve by Twelve team had already put together a few looks inspired by my own 'Mixology' posts. It was so fun to see their interpretation of my style! After going through the clothes together, they let me tweak the looks and style up a few of my own. Occasionally, I threw in my own accessories, but for the most part it was all Twelve by Twelve goodness.
What was the concept and how did it involve your personal style?
The concept for the shoot was my style but exaggerated, so every ensemble had a bit too much of everything (in the best possible way!). We couldn't just use one necklace or one bracelet—it had to be at least three or five! That was actually a good challenge for me and I loved taking my style to a more extreme place.
What did you think of the hair and makeup?
The hair and makeup definitely pulled it all together. I loved the finger waves they put in my hair; I wish I could style my coif that way every day!
What are you most excited for from the new Twelve by Twelve collection?
I'll be checking the website every day until the safety pin print silk t-shirt and the beaded petal blouse arrive!

let's drink: marques de casa concha

last night, we attended a wine-pairing dinner at lolo dad's brasserie hosted by concha y toro, one of the top wineries in chile. their wines are now distributed in the philippines by fly ace corporation. because we had nothing else to do yesterday, wouldn't you know it, we were the first one to arrive! and guess kung sino ang kasabay namin! aba, si victoria valera! este, si gretchen barretto. she stepped out of what looked like a bus—that was probably her "trailer," which she takes with her to shoots. it's like a little house that has everything you need. gretchen arrived with patrick rosas, who has been doing her makeup for years.
we chatted her up and she told us that after dinner, she was proceeding to her taping at SOFA. her face was completely devoid of makeup and when we asked to take her photo, sabi niya, "ok lang, my face is kinda shiny?" she probably had some high-tech cream on her face that she couldn't wipe off, but she was completely un-self-consious about it. well, that cream must be working because her skin is flawless (always has been)!

anyhoo on to the dinner. after each course was served, chef ariel manuel would come out to explain why he created this particular dish for that particular wine.
the pairings were what you might call no-brainers, or rather classic pairings, except maybe for the last one, which was quite unexpected. we started with chilled scallops and shrimps with marinated salmon and mango quenelle, micro greens and aioli—paired with marques de casa concha 2007 chardonnay. this fresh, crisp white wine with citrus notes went perfectly with the light, buttery seafood starter.
next was roasted muscovy duck breast, duck leg asado puff, and seared duck foie gras—paired with marques de casa concha 2007 merlot. according to chef ariel, you can never go wrong with a duck + merlot combo.
another meat dish was up next: roast wagyu eye of rib eye, stewed beef cheek with potato purée—paired with marques de casa concha 2007 cabernet sauvignon. something rich and heavy like this requires a full-bodied wine, so a cab sauv will be the best pairing.
finally, dessert was served: dark valrhona chocolate and shaved almond terrine with vanilla almond ice cream (the ice cream chef ariel created for selecta). now you would think a dessert wine would be paired with this; instead we got the pièce de résistance from concha y toro: marques de casa concha 2007 carménère. apparently, the carménère grape is unique to chile. it was once widely planted in the bordeaux region till disease wiped it out. but before then, chile was able to import it and is the only country today that produces commercial quantities. the wine is deep and dark, with hints of pepper, vanilla, and dark chocolate—that's why it went perfectly with this dessert!

new bolso bags

hmp the handbag is gonna feel so bad she didn't get to blog about this. we were invited to afternoon tea by bolso manila to introduce their new collection of bags. it was held at what shoe wearing, a shoe store at jannov plaza. we'd been hearing about bolso for a couple years now, but never had the chance to get up-close and personal with the team behind the brand. here are the four lovely, talented, and entrepreneurial ladies behind bolso:
above, kit gordon (in yellow), karisia bitong (in blue), jenny villegas (in purple), and rorie carlos (in black)—four childhood friends who one day decided to start a business together. bolso was born in 2006 out of these young working moms' need for a super-functional bag that could handle all their daily needs—and for that you need something lightweight, roomy, sturdy, versatile, with lots of pockets, and above all, stylish! so they came out with a canvas tote with nine pockets and a detachable pochette—in 10 cool combinations!
taking off from the success of this bag, bolso manila now launched a similar tote in a waterproof nylon in four color combinations: purple/yellow (very chic), red/tan (very sporty), pink/khaki (very preppy), and brown/blue (very corporate). (other combinations available.)
the bags cost P1,200 and can be ordered through their website www.bolsomanila.com starting wednesday, or through mobile 0917-814-3194 or landline 217-5880. other cute items (as seen—coin purses and passport holders) are also available.

springfield for women

whenever we travel to other countries, we try not to shop in stores that have branches in manila. but when we were in spain last april, we noticed that the springfield stores had women's clothes. so we had to check it out. they allocate a huge space for the women's collection, practically half the store.

over here in manila, we've entered springfield maybe once or twice to look for something for the hubby. well, wouldn't you know it, they've actually changed the name of the store to springfield man & woman—because they now carry the women's line! since february!
it's a good thing then that they decided to introduce the fall/winter collection yesterday, otherwise we never would've have known about this development (till the hubby probably needed something and was too lazy to shop himself). the launch was nothing big or flashy, just a simple, casual event right outside the greenbelt 3 store. check out some of the pieces shown during the mini fashion show:

this is what we like to wear on long-haul flights—stretchy pieces in black:
when it gets cold, you add a cute little jacket:
a feminine spring dress given an edge with a military-inspired jacket:
a slouchy outfit for those slouchy days:
girls everywhere like to dress like this—cause it's just so damn comfortale!

springfield is located at greenbelt 3, power plant mall, bonifacio high street, megamall, trinoma, robinsons midtown, and rustan's makati.

CALVIN KLEIN UNDERWEAR ANNOUNCES ACTRESS ZOE SALDANA TO BE FEATURED IN FALL 2010 GLOBAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

Calvin Klein Underwear, a division of Warnaco Inc. “We are excited to have Zoe Saldana as the face of Calvin Klein Underwear, and Calvin Klein Envy, our new product launch,” said Bob Mazzoli, Chief Creative Officer of Calvin Klein Underwear. “Zoe brings the campaign to life, and her universal appeal will enable us to continue to expand our dialogue with our consumers worldwide.”

“Calvin Klein has always put forth such beautifully executed campaigns,” said Ms. Saldana. “It’s very exciting for me to be associated with such an iconic, globally recognized brand like Calvin Klein Underwear.”

the handbag diaries: the body shop campaign

the fash pack still refuses to sit in front of her mac and blog. but her trusty handbag, which goes where she goes, is here and is raring to blog blog blog! so enjoy the handbag diaries while it's around...

parang nakaka-pagod rin pala mag-blog. we don't know how the fash pack does it everyday. no wonder her brain is tired! or maybe she's just tired, period. kasi nga nag-start ang workout with her personal trainer this week... her sked the other day went like this:

11am: workout with trainer
1pm: lunch
3pm: kill time at the mall
4pm: meeting
6pm: event
9pm: birthday party

as for me, i'm just along for the ride. i get stuffed with nice giveaways and sometimes with used, lipstick-stained napkins that smell of alcohol, ugh. but at least i get to share with readers worthy causes like the body shop's stop sex trafficking of children and young people. click on the pic below and read the really sad statistic: the body shop partnered with ECPAT (end child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children for sexual purposes) to raise awareness about this shockingly rampant practice. apparently, 2.5 million people are trafficked every year, and human trafficking is the world's third-largest criminal industry (after illegal drugs and guns)! and each year, 1.2 million children and young people are estimated to be trafficked, sexually abused, and exploited. so yesterday, people were invited to come to the body shop's glorietta 3 store to sign a petition to stop sex trafficking! they aim to collect at least 500,000 signatures, so go to the store and do it! no purchase necessary! you can pick up a brochure for more info or go to the body shop website.
but if you're feeling a bit generous, you can buy a limited-edition soft hands kind heart hand cream (P195)—all profits from the sale of this product will be donated to ECPAT philippines.
you can also pick up an eco bag—who doesn't need another one?? the more bags, the merrier!! this one sells for P295 and all proceeds go to ECPAT philippines as well. no need to feel guilty, it's for a good cause!!
and lookey! a free gift! if you spend at least P2,500 in a single receipt, you get this super-cute cosmetic pouch! i likey! i want this!! (to my human: please get rid of the ratty makeup case you put inside me everyday, bulok na!!)

the handbag diaries: ayala malls top food picks

it's friday, could this be the last of the handbag diaries? let's see...

food food food! i'm lucky i'm a handbag. because no matter how much my human gains weight, i still fit! i don't end up as a hand-me-down or worse get sold at the next garage sale. i'm saying this because we attended another lunchtime press con that was all about—what else?—food! it was held at fely J's at greenbelt 5 and my human was so excited because the food there is really good. i know because she didn't dare squish me behind her butt. gotta make a lotta space for all that food, so she parked me on another chair with other handbags. ugh i hate when that happens.. being eyed from strap to bottom by other bags.. and it gets worse when humans ooh and ahh over other bags and not me!!! my human failed me again :-(

Ayala Malls takes you on a gastronomic journey this August and September to discover and experience the favorite food picks of the country’s top food authorities.
