manila bay vs pedring

it's 6:48 on a thursday evening and i'm still at the office. i want to go home, but i don't want to go home. because we haven't had electricity since early tuesday morning!! waaahhh... it all started out early tuesday morning when the electricity went off. then it started getting warm. so i don't know what time it was when i got up because it was so dark, and i went to open a window and got the shock of my life when i looked out—our street was flooded! we've lived in this building by the bay for over 10 years and through milenyo, ondoy, and countless tyhpoons, our street had never flooded. it was already thigh-high!
then we got a call from the neighbor that the building garage was flooded too and that water had probably entered our cars by then. pictured below is the staircase leading down to the garage, with the water already covering the first step. it eventually reached up to the third step.
but it wasn't even raining hard! apparently, this flood was not from rain; it was from sea water—from manila bay! ohmygod was there a tsunami?? our unit does not face the bay, so i had no idea what was going on. so we went up to a neighbor's flat facing the bay and i saw it: the super strong wind causing the water to whip against the breakwater (and yes eventually breaking them) and creating huge waves that were higher than the coconut trees! it was an incredible, scary sight. so dirty, stinky, yucky water flowed onto roxas boulevard and into neighboring streets. including ours.
here's a video i took of the waves. i have never seen anything like this and i'm willing to bet, neither have you. i didn't want to turn off the sound so that you can hear the waves. so ignore the laughter in the back. (the neighborhood dogs got together and started humping, so yah it was funny.):

scenes from the malls

scenes at power plant mall:

giant buttons at marks & spencer window display. hmmm i have a big white wall where those buttons would be perfect...
happy lemon now open at the archeology section. i've never tried it. just what is its appeal? i know many people who are crazy over it...
scene at greenbelt 3:

this was 10 days ago. now open. it's right next to power mac center.
scenes at rustan's makati:

it's christmas in rustan's! earlier this week, i spotted mrs. nena tantoco decorating all the trees in the fifth floor. i'm sure by now they're all over the store na.
cute clock! but i bet i can make this at home using my dad's old ties. kung machaga lang ako...
tory burch to open soon inside rustan's! this is in the cosmetics level where prada used to be when they carried ready-to-wear.
scene at glorietta 5:

now you know where to bring all your used plastic bags! (and old cassette and VHS tapes.) they will all be recycled into, er, plastic bags. vicious cycle...
you can also toss your old gadgets, batteries, and components here too. these bins are located at the lobby area, next to the information counter.

fashion watch: jojie lloren and joel escober

if you missed fashion watch last week, view it here! photos are terrible because the models walk too damn fast. i wish they would slow down just a little bit. never mind me, but what about those people who paid to sit and have a cocktail and WATCH a fashion show? did they get their money's worth? the models just stomped by and before you could even get a good look at the outfit, she was gone. zoom! there was no elegance. i mean, this is not a regular fashion show meant for fashion editors and press people, who are used to thinking fast and scribbling even faster. this is a salon-style fashion show, which is more for entertainment and for potential buyers, who are invited by the designers to see their latest collections. but that's just me.

jojie lloren was inspired by the colors of exotic birds like parrots, parakeets, and macaws. full of tropical colors like green, orange, yellow, and turquoise. grace and ria opened and closed the show, respectively, with fabulous feathers on their heads, looking like beautiful birds!

joel escober is known for the 3D fabric treatments and embellishments on his clothes, which were present in this collection of streamlined silhouettes in neutral colors. the 3D effect gave the otherwise simple designs character and texture. i especially loved the long black dress, which reminded me a bit of patrice diaz's collection last season made of scraps of black T-shirt material.

fashion watch is on every thursday, 4pm at the makati shangri-la lobby lounge. for reservations, call 813-8888. today's show will feature patrice diaz and JC buendia

so i got home early today from work—hello, 7:30pm, early! luckily for me, my office is a mere 15 minutes away (five minutes on a good day). but today was one of those days that i actually had NO EVENTS to attend—which is rare! (i hope i didn't miss anything, though...) so after passing by chicken charlie for some take-home, er, chicken (the hubby wasn't home and i don't cook and we don't have household help to make us breakfast, lunch, or dinner) i was home-sweet-home with my doggy in no time. then munching on chicken wings and french fries with a glass of wine on the side, watching "coming to america" on HBO—it was quite relaxing. but kinda bitin. i needed some dessert. pampa-alis ng sawa. i'm not really a dessert person, but the movie wasn't over so i needed something to wind everything up nicely. then i remembered the giveaway box of chocolates from last week's van houten event!
oi. it had my favorite chocolate-covered nuts—in this case, almonds. the box of chocolates came from the van houten event to announce that after 180 years, it is now owned by hershey. i used to be a chocoholic and those days came back to me at the sight, touch, and smell of those brown little things...
and tonight i had a bag of those chocolate-covered almonds—ALL. BY. MYSELF. (i told ya—this week is gonna be all about foodfoodfood!)

sinfully yours

sorry, but it looks like this week is going to be all about foodfoodfood! last week, makati shangri-la's patisserie called sinfully had its formal opening in greenbelt 5 (2/f beside cibo). the shop had been causing quite a human traffic jam since it opened because there is a huge clear glass window where you can watch these lovely ladies bake up a storm!
and look at the goodies that they make there fresh every day! choose your chocolate:
how about a mini cake? all for you—or to share, if you're feeling generous ;-)
one of their most popular items—macarons! love the colors! to buy individually or by the dozen:
or take home a pre-packaged box of cookies. the design is so cute!
and of course makati shang's signature emoti-cakes. here's JM rodriguez (he and i were the early birds) trying to design his cake by choosing the words + the face = emoti-cake!

let's eat: diwal-icious

i've been avoiding having too many food posts one after the other, lest this begins to look like a food blog hehe... but this particular food fest involves one of our friends and supporters, and is on for a limited time only. it started today and i tried it and i must share! the info, that is, not the food hehe... i first met chef pauline banusing during my first trip to iloilo back in 2003. i don't think she was a chef yet at the time. but look at her now! (this is her standing next to the paseo uno dessert station, which features the deadly-but-delicious yema cake.)
she's the featured chef at "diwal-icious visayas: bounties of the sea" food fest happening at mandarin oriental's paseo uno. the highlight of the buffet will be seafood, particularly diwal (angel wing clams), which is now in season. it is soooo good! this is what it looks like (served next to bacolod centennial clams):
chef pauline really knows the way to my stomach—este, my heart. she had this local lobster grilled just for me!
chef pauline wrote a travel story about her hometown iloilo city in a past issue of style weekend, and like i've said before, the ilonggos are really proud of their food! no trip to the visayas is complete without eatingeatingeating! here's a complete list of the dishes to be served during diwal-icious. start salivating... kara ross at celestina

are you familiar with the accessories/jewelry brand kara ross? select pieces from her collections will be available for sale at celestina, greenbelt 5 till october 15. i had the pleasure of interviewing her handbag and jewelry coordinator, noelle rivera, last friday. "kara is very sad that she can't be here today," said noelle. "but it's new york fashion week and it was important for her to be there." of course naman. apparently, kara has known ricco and tina ocampo (owners of celestina) for some time now, and that's how this "pop-up store" happened. the couple personally selected the pieces to be sold, as they know the market and what will appeal to filipino women. below is an article that will appear in next friday's style weekend. i thought to give the fash pack readers a sneak peek. then go check out the collection tomorrow!

Looking for something new and different to add to your jewelry collection? Check out these one-of-a-kind pieces available for a limited time only

by Liza Ilarde

Kara Ross was a teenager when she made her first trip to Africa, where she bought a tourmaline stone. When she returned home to the US, she designed a ring around that stone and had it made by a local jeweler. It was that experience that eventually brought Kara to where she is today (after a stint in advertising at Harper's Bazaar)—a successful jewelry designer.

That one-of-a-kind aesthetic is evident in her lines of jewelry, which include the Fine Jewelry Gallery (one-off pieces using precious gems and unusual materials, available by special order), the Gemstone Collection (which uses 18k gold sterling silver, 18k gold accents, and semi-precious stones), and the Boutique Collection (more trend-driven and with lower price points), as well as Handbags and Belts, which use exotic skins designed and hand-dyed in Spain. Kara is often inspired by her travels, architecture, and fashion trends.

And Kara Ross is bringing part of that collection to Manila—albeit briefly. As New York Fashion Week wound down, her handbag and jewelry coordinator, Noelle Rivera, was in town to introduce some choice pieces to the local market.

"We'll be setting up a pop-up store in Celestina in Greenbelt 5 for 30 days," says Noelle, "where the Boutique Collection and Handbags will be available for sale." Among the jewelry pieces are Kara's signature cuffs, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings, all made with 18k gold-plate, exotic skins, and gemstones such as rose quartz, onyx, and hematite. There will be around 20 bag styles, most of them clutches, in colorful exotic leathers accented with gemstones.

"Our skins are all designed, dyed, and treated in Spain, and are exclusive to Kara Ross," explains Noelle. "They include python, lizard, ostrich, stingray, and watersnake. The alligator skin, however, is from our suppliers in the US."

For a relatively young company (it was launched in 2003), Kara Ross has already achieved success and recognition, being sold in luxury department stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Harrods, and worn by Hollywood celebrities, such as Hilary Swank, Anne Hathaway, and Oprah Winfrey. So what's next?

"In January 2012, we will be launching our men's line," reveals Noelle. Called Ross by Kara Ross, materials used will be more masculine, like gunmetal and dark stones. As for other product categories such as shoes and ready-to-wear, Noelle smiles. "Who knows? We're always developing new things. For Kara, the sky's the limit."

Kara Ross Boutique Collection and Handbags will be available until October 15, 2011 at Celestina, Greenbelt 5, tel (2) 729-9715.

safe for black

there's a new deo in town and it's called rexona crystal.
wasn't it rexona that popularized that tagline, "my deodorant let me down"? i always like to say that when i'm in a situation where it's hot and sticky and my armpits start to get, er, moist, and i have to say it: my deodorant let me down :-( well, another way your deodorant can let you down is when it leaves a sticky, yukky, white residue in the kili-kili area of your clothes—which is especially obvious on black clothes. well, rexona crystal, with its anti-white-mark formula, claims to NOT do that to your favorite black clothes! and to prove it, they held at makati shangri-la a mini fashion show with black dresses by four female designers: czarina villa, michi calica, camille co, and charina sarte. a sample from each of them:

czarina villa:
michi calica:
camille co:
charina sarte:
and to prove even further that it does work, host bianca valerio and a rep from rexona showed how "brand X" left white marks on the left side of the black velvet board (held by two models), but was completely clear on the right side, on which rexona crystal was used.
so if you like to wear black, this is for you. available in aerosol and roll-on versions.
